Box Score FROSTBURG, Md. - After a pair of early goals in the championship game of the Frostburg State Tournament, the host Bobcats stuck a shot in the back of the net in the waning minutes of a 1-1 deadlock to hand the Bridgewater Eagles (1-3) field hockey team a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon.
Frostburg State (2-2) struck first just 45 ticks into the game when Becky Randel flipped a high shot over goalkeeper Jessica Balsano's head and into the back of the net off of a Rachel Merritt pass to put the Bobcats up 1-0 early.
Bridgewater answered eight minutes later when sophomore Caroline Augsburger tallied her third goal of the weekend on a loose ball in front of the net to even the game at 1-1 which is where it would remain until late in the second half.
The Eagles peppered the Frostburg State goalie over the opening 35 minutes of play, owning an 8-to-3 advantage in shots, but couldn't find the go-ahead goal.
In the second half, the two teams had opportunities before Bobcats senior Alli Elliott stuck a shot past Balsano on a Randel assist to put Frostburg State up by a 2-1 tally with under nine minutes to play.
Bridgewater used a timeout with under two minutes to left to set the offense, but the Eagles didn't have enough firepower down the stretch as they evenutally fell by a 2-1 score.
Freshmen Alenka Ferrufino and Taylor Prillaman each registered three shots in the loss, while Augsburger tallied the lone goal for the Eagles attack.
Balsano turned away seven Frostburg State shots in the loss.
The Bobcats were paced offensively by Randel's six-shot effort. The junior tallied a goal and an assist on the afternoon to lead the way.
Bobcats netminder Maggie Edwards made five saves to earn the win.
Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Hood. Start time against the Blazers is set for 5 p.m.
