BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Sophomore Rachael Loy tallied two late first-half goals to break a 1-1 deadlock and propel the Bridgewater Eagles (6-3) field hockey team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Frostburg State.
Frostburg State went on the offensive to open the game, peppering the Bridgewater goal with a pair of shots before a shot from Amber McCabe hit the post and Jackie Best was there to put the ball in the back of the net to build a 1-0 Bobcats lead just 5:32 into the contest.
Following the Bobcats score, the tide shifted as the Eagles offense went on the attack. After a pair of Bridgewater shots was turned away, senior Galen Goodman took a pass from Taylor Prillaman and beat the keeper to tie the score up at a goal each late in the 14th minute.
Bridgewater stayed on the attack in the middle part of the first half, pounding the Frostburg State (4-7) goal with shots but Bobcats goalie Megan Grimm was up to the challenge until the Eagles drew a corner at the 28:39 mark of the contest. Loy drilled the corner insert to the point where Caroline Augsburger took a hard shot and Loy chipped it up into the net to put the Eagles out in front, 2-1.
Loy added her second goal of the game just over two minutes later on an unassisted score to put the Eagles out in front 3-1 at the intermission.
Over the opening 35 minutes of play, the Eagles controlled the action, outshooting Frostburg State by a 9-3 tally.
Out of the break, it was more of the same as Bridgewater fired off 11 shots in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net, but the Eagles didn't need to as the defense held strong and kept the Bobcats off of the scoreboard to secure the 3-1 win.
Loy fired off six shots and registered two goals to aid the Eagles to victory, while Augsburger rattled off seven shots to lead a Bridgewater offense that outshot Frostburg State by a 20-8 gap.
Senior goalie Jessica Balsano picked up the win, turning away two Frostburg State shots across the first 61:58 of action. Freshman Brianna Bashore played the final eight-plus minutes and recorded a save along the way.
Bridgewater limited the opportunities from Frostburg State's leading scorers, Becky Randel and Jackie Best. Randel led the Frostburg State offense with four shots on the evening, while Best chipped in two and the lone Bobcats goal of the game.
Grimm was tagged with the loss after posting eight saves in the contest.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan. Start time against the Marlins is set for 12 noon.
