Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior Caroline Augsburger assisted on the game's first goal and scored the final goal of the contest, but the Generals of Washington and Lee scored three goals between the two Bridgewater tallies as the Eagles field hockey team fell on Wednesday evening by a 3-2 score to the Generals.
With the loss, Bridgewater earned the number four seed for the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament which opens play this weekend. Bridgewater will host fifth-seeded Eastern Mennonite on Saturday at the Jopson Athletic Complex in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC tournament.
Bridgewater (11-6, 5-3 ODAC) broke the early deadlock at the 19:08 mark when sophomore Taylor Prillaman took an Augsburger pass and found the back of the net to put the Eagles out in front, 1-0.
Following the Bridgewater goal, Washington and Lee (5-14, 3-5 ODAC) controlled the rest of the first half, behind three goals in eight minutes.
At the 24:14 mark, Lauren Boone netted an unassisted goal to knot the game up at a goal each before the Generals took the lead less than three minutes later off of a Noelani Schulmeyer tally to build a 2-1 Washington and Lee lead.
The Generals took a 3-1 lead into the locker room when Sydney Tomaso scored with under three minutes to play to put Washington and Lee up by two goals at the break.
Washington and Lee controlled the opening 35 minutes of play, outshooting Bridgewater by an 11-2 tally.
Bridgewater took control of the game in the second half, tallying nine corners before scoring off of its 10th of the half. Augsburger scored off of a Colleen Dickson pass to trim the deficit to 3-2 with less than a minute to play, but it was too little, too late as the Eagles fell to the Generals by a 3-2 margin in the season finale.
In the second half, Bridgewater thoroughly dominated the Generals but had just one goal to show for it after outshooting Washington and Lee by a 15-0 margin.
Augsburger tallied a goal on six shots and dished out an assist to lead the Eagles in the loss.
Senior Jessica Balsano made six saves in the loss.
Washington and Lee was led offensively by Boone's goal on two shots. Megan Axelrod made seven saves to pick up the victory in the cage.
Bridgewater hosts Eastern Mennonite in a 4 vs. 5 matchup on Saturday at the Jopson Athletic Complex. Start time against the Royals has yet to be determined.
