Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's volleyball team dropped the first game against Lebanon Valley, 3-1 before bouncing back to sweep Frostburg State 3-0 in the final match of the Fall Fever Quad tournament in Nininger Hall on Saturday afternoon.
In the midday match against Lebanon Valley, Bridgewater came out strong to take the first game 25-17. The roles reversed in game two as the Dutchmen pulled out a 25-13 win. The Eagles tried to earn it back the third and fourth games, but fell 25-19 and 25-15, respectively.
A kill by Katie Long opened up the first set for the Eagles before an ace by Ashley Weik and back-to-back kills by Abby Mills and Lindsay Kallam allowed Bridgewater to build a 7-2 lead. Bridgewater was able to take advantage of a few Lebanon Valley miscues, before Mills notched a kill and service ace, followed by back-to-back Donaldson kills to give the Eagles a 16-7 advantage.
Lebanon Valley took a 4-0 run of its own as it used Bridgewater errors to cut the lead to 19-13, but a Megann Grimes kill ended the streak. Shannon Skellchock tallied an ace to put the Eagles up 23-13, before a Long kill and Dutchmen error handed Bridgewater the 25-13 victory.
The Dutchmen came out in the second game and scored five straight points before a kill by Long cut off the run. A kill by Kristen Trice and back-to-back kills by Megan Lookabaugh allowed the Eagles to come within three points with a score of 12-9, but Lebanon Valley took advantage of Bridgewater errors and extended their lead to 23-11. Two straight kills from Grimes brought the score to 23-13, but the Dutchmen earned the last two points to take the 25-13 win.
The two teams traded points early on in the third game and tied the game at 4, 5, and 6 before Lebanon Valley pulled ahead to 12-7 and forced a Bridgewater timeout. A Long kill allowed the Eagles to cut the lead to 14-9, but the Dutchmen continued to take advantage of Bridgewater mishaps. Another Long kill forced a side out and back-to-back kills by Grimes allowed the Eagles to come within three, 17-14.
Two straight kills from Trice cut the lead to 23-18, but the Eagles were unable to hold off the Dutchmen as they fell 25-19.
The Eagles quickly took a 5-2 lead to start the fourth set, but committed a few errors, allowing Lebanon Valley to take the lead 7-5. Kills by Trice and Lookabaugh put Bridgewater down by only one with a score of 10-9, but the Dutchmen tallied six straight points to extend the lead to 16-9. The teams traded a few points near the end of the set, with Long notching two killsto cut the lead to 21-15. Bridgewater couldn't put a stop to the offensive efforts of Lebanon Valley and fell by a score of 25-15 in the fourth game to conclude the match.
Long paced the way for the Eagles with 10 kills, while Kallam dished out 28 assists and Mara Hogan notched a game-high 17 digs.
In the second match of the afternoon against the Frostburg State Bobcats, Bridgewater came out strong and took the first game 25-13. Using a number of Bobcats' miscues, the Eagles claimed the second game, 25-13, and won the third game by a 25-16 tally.
Bridgewater quickly jumped to a 2-0 lead with kills from Maddy Carter and Grimes to start off the first set. A kill by Long sparked a 4-0 run, while Weik added an ace in the stretch, putting the Eagles up 7-2.
Bridgewater went on another run, scoring five straight points with kills from Trice, Donaldson, Kallam and a service ace from Grimes to boost the lead to 13-4. The two teams battled back and forth, but the Bobcats were unable to recover as they fell 25-13.
The teams exchanged points early on in the second game before kills by Jette Wade and Grimes forced a Bobcat timeout with a score of 9-4. Back-to-back kills from Trice and Long, as well as an ace from Nikki Snyder boosted the Eagles lead to 14-7.
Bridgewater turned in a strong offense in the final five points over the game with kills from Kallam, Grimes, and Wade which built the lead to 24-13 before a Trice kill notched the 25-13 win.
The third set started off with points being traded early on in the set and drew the game to ties at 10 and 11. Carter sparked a five point run for the Eagles with a kill, while Chelsea Owensby added two aces and Grimes tallied two kills during the stretch to give Bridgewater a 16-11 lead.
Bridgewater continued to take advantage of the Bobcat miscues and a Long kill ended the match for a 25-16 victory.
Trice led the way for the Eagles' offensive efforts against Frostburg with 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .478 and Kallam added 25 assists.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Randolph-Macon to take on the Yellow Jackets in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match-up. Start time is set at 7 p.m.
