Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee outscored Bridgewater College 5-0 during the final two minutes Saturday afternoon to take a 69-66 victory over the Eagles in Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball action.
Bridgewater (5-11, 3-5 in the ODAC) took a 66-64 lead on two free throws by Cassidy Burkholder with 2:08 left in the game.
W&L (4-11, 2-6 in the ODAC) then pulled to within one on a free throw by Annie Gauf with 1:58 to play. The teams traded empty possessions until Shelby Hendricks made 1-of-2 at the foul line to tie the game with 55 seconds remaining.
Molly Shelley missed from close range on the next possession and W&L's Gauf controlled the rebound. With 23 ticks remaining Paige Corvino was fouled and the Generals' sophomore hit both foul shots to put the Generals on top, 68-66. The Eagles turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and Corvino was fouled with seven seconds left. She missed the first free throw, but made the second for a three-point, 69-66, lead. The Eagles were unable to get off a shot in the closing seconds as W&L held on for the three-point victory.
The contest was close throughout as the biggest lead of the game was an eight-point Eagles edge in the first half.
The Eagles trailed 18-17 with 13:44 left in the first half before a 10-1 run pushed Bridgewater to an eight-point lead. A layup by Heather Cantrell put the Eagles on top 19-18 and an inside shot by Holly Morgan made it a three-point margin.
Burkholder scored four straight points before W&L's Samantha Sharman made 1-of-2 foul shots, making the score 25-19. Jessi Strom then knocked down a jumper, giving the Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 27-19, with 8:45 left in the half.
W&L responded with a 12-2 rally to forge ahead of the Eagles. Wesleigh Vick knocked down two jumpers for the Generals before Burkholder countered with a jumper to keep the Eagles on top, 29-23. A 3-pointer by Sharman trimmed the margin to three and a pair of foul shots by Gauf made it a one-point game. Jackie Clifford then connected from beyond the arc for a 31-29 Generals lead with 3:06 left in the half.
Cantrell scored four straight points for the Eagles before a jumper by Vick tied the score at 33-33. Clifford added a pair of foul shots with 42 seconds left and the Generals headed to the locker room with a 35-33 halftime lead.
The contest was tied three times early in the second half before a 3-pointer by Shelby Hendricks put the Generals out front 42-39 with 15:10 remaining.
The Eagles then reeled off the next seven points. Burkholder tied the score with a 3-pointer before Cantrell and Morgan added layups, giving Bridgewater a 46-42 lead with 13:29 to go.
The next spurt belonged to the hosts as an 8-0 run propelled the Generals to a 50-46 lead with 10:50 left to play.
The Generals held the upper hand until a layup by Molly Shelley tied the score at 58-58 with 5:07 left on the clock. Clifford hit a pair of foul shots, but Burkholder responded with a jumper to tie the score at 60 apiece.
Hendricks and Shelley traded buckets before a jumper by Morgan put the Eagles on top 64-62 with 3:10 left in the game.
The teams exchanged empty trips before a jumper by Corvino tied the score with 2:18 left. Burkholder then put the Eagles ahead for the final time with her two free throws, setting the stage for the final two minutes of action.
Shelley scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Eagles. Cantrell posted her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Burkholder also finished with 13 points and Morgan added 11.
Clifford led the Generals with 15 points, followed by Vick with 14 and Sharman with 12.
Despite Cantrell's work on the glass, W&L held a 40-31 rebounding advantage. The Eagles made 25-of-62 shots for 40.3 percent while the Generals connected on 27-of-60 shots for 45 percent accuracy.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday evening when they host Virginia Wesleyan College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
