Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. - Midway through overtime number two, junior Taylor Prillaman tallied her eighth goal of the year to break a 2-2 deadlock and hand the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team a thrilling 3-2 victory in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action at Shenandoah on Tuesday evening.
Bridgewater (7-7, 3-1 ODAC) got the scoring started in the first stanza of a back-and-forth game. At the 17:32 mark of the first half, sophomore Shannon Strosser found the back of the net off of a corner insert to build a 1-0 Eagles lead.
The Eagles remained out in front until the final play of the first half. Shenandoah earned a penalty corner as the clock expired on the first half and the Hornets netted the equalizer on the corner. Ashley Cross' shot was blocked and she then found Kelani Bailey off of the rebound to tie the game up at a goal each at the half.
Out of the halftime break, Shenandoah (9-5, 4-1 ODAC) took its first lead of the game just seven minutes into the second stanza. The Hornets earned a penalty corner late in the 42nd minute prior to Presha Merritt finding Sarah Brock for Brock's third goal of the year to put the hosts up by a 2-1 tally.
Over the next 18 minutes, both teams had limited opportunities before the Eagles netted the equalizer in the final 10 minutes of play. At the 61:41 mark of regulation, Prillaman fired a shot at the cage and her scoring attempt was turned away. Strosser was there to pick up the rebound and stuck her second shot of the game in the back of the net to tie the contest up at two goals each with 8:12 to play.
Both teams had chances over the remainder of regulation, but neither team tallied the go-ahead goal as the game shifted to an extra session.
Bridgewater looked to end the game early in the first overtime set when Elizabeth Washington fired a shot on goal but Shenandoah goalkeeper Jenna Rampale turned away the Washington scoring attempt to keep the game knotted at a 2-2 tally.
The Eagles remained on the attack for the rest of the first overtime session but couldn't break through for the go-ahead goal as the game moved to a second extra set.
In the second overtime, the pendulum swung in the favor of the host Hornets. Shenandoah tallied a pair of shots before the Eagles switched the field and moved into the offensive attack zone. Senior Caroline Augsburger's shot sailed wide midway through the 92nd minute, but the Eagles maintained possession and Prillaman scored the game winner just eight seconds later at the 91:52 mark to send Bridgewater home with a hard-fought 3-2 win.
Prillaman led the Bridgewater offense with a goal off of seven shots, while Strosser netted a game-high two goals on just a pair of shots.
Bridgewater owned a slim 17-16 edge in shots in an evenly-contested affair. The Eagles also posted an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Freshman Amanda Harper made four saves en route to securing her fifth win of the year.
Cross led the Hornets with six shots and Rampale picked up the loss after making six saves.
Bridgewater returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan. Start time is set for 2 p.m. in a matchup that also marks Senior Day for the Eagles.
