Men's Lacrosse Upends Transylvania, 10-6

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Behind a four-goal effort from freshman Chris Voorhees, the Bridgewater Eagles men's lacrosse team took an early advantage and never trailed as the Eagles defeated Transylvania by a 10-6 score on Saturday afternoon.

The win is the second in a row for the Eagles and improves Bridgewater to 2-0 in the all-time series with the Pioneers.

Bridgewater got on the board early with a pair of goals in the first minute to run out to a 2-0 lead. Senior Kameron Reppe put the Eagles on the board just 39 ticks into the game when he took a pass from Sam Cheplick and fired a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 Bridgewater lead. Sophomore Rob Simmons added an unassisted tally 20 seconds later to build a two-goal advantage.

Transylvania trimmed the Bridgewater lead to 2-1 off of a Clark Watts tally before Voorhees registered his first goal of the game with 8:24 to play in the first to hand the Eagles a 3-1 lead after the first quarter of play. Sophomore Kevin Ashcraft assisted on the Voorhees tally.

After closing the first-quarter scoring with a goal, Voorhees wasted little time in getting the Eagles back on the board at the start of the second. Just 27 seconds into the second frame, the freshman stroked a shot past the keeper to build a 4-1 Bridgewater lead.

The Pioneers made Bridgewater pay when a Cheplick slashing penalty gave the hosts a man-up opportunity. With an extra man, Zack Riggs scored for Transylvania to trim the Bridgewater lead to 4-2.

Bridgewater owned the latter half of the second stanza as Matthew Arndt and Max Ruffing got in on the scoring to send the Eagles to the half with a 6-2 lead.

After a first 30 minutes of play that was dominated by the Eagles, Transylvania came out with new life in the third quarter, outshooting the Eagles by a 14-4 margin while cutting the Bridgewater lead to a single goal.

The Pioneers again capitalized on a man-up opportunity to cut the deficit to 6-3 before a Gus Burge tally carved the Bridgewater advantage to 6-4 with 3:54 to play in the third. Andrew Meyer scored with 2:17 to play in the third to pull the Pioneers to within a goal, 6-5.

Transylvania opened the fourth in the same way it ended the third quarter as the Pioneers got back on the board with another Burge tally to knot the game up at six goals each, but that was as close to the lead as Transylvania would get.

Freshman Michael Darby ended the Pioneers' spurt with an unassisted goal before Ruffing added a goal off of a Simmons pass to give the Eagles an insurance tally and an 8-6 lead with 4:21 to play.

Voorhees registered back-to-back goals within seven seconds of each other to double the advantage and send Bridgewater home with a 10-6 win.

Voorhees led the Bridgewater offense with four goals on six shots while Ruffing added a pair of goals to lead the offense.

Netminder Andrew Buss secured the win after turning away a dozen shots on the afternoon.

Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Alvernia. Opening faceoff against the Crusaders is set for 1 p.m.
