BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Junior Taylor Prillaman netted two goals and senior Caroline Augsburger netted a goal and dished out an assist as the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team defeated Washington and Lee by a 4-1 tally on Tuesday evening in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
The win for Bridgewater marks the team's third victory in a row.
Bridgewater (6-5, 2-0 ODAC) got on the board early in a half that was controlled by the Eagles. Augsburger ripped in her sixth goal of the year when she fired a hard shot from the top of the arc and found the back of the cage to build a 1-0 Bridgewater lead at the 4:41 mark of the first half.
The Eagles maintained their pressure at the offensive end before a pair of late first-half goals gave the hosts a 3-0 lead at the intermission. At the 22:14 mark of the first frame, junior Rachael Loy took a pass from Elizabeth Washington and found the back of the cage for a 2-0 Eagles lead.
Prillaman added her first goal of the evening just over two minutes later. The Magnolia, Delaware native took a pass from Caroline Fletcher and got a shot through a group of Washington and Lee defenders to send the Eagles to the half with a 3-0 lead.
Washington and Lee (5-5, 0-2 ODAC) looked to get on the board over the remainder of the first half but the Bridgewater defense was up to the challenge as the Eagles went to the locker room with a three-goal advantage.
Bridgewater owned a 10-5 edge in shots in the first half while the penalty corner battle was even at five each.
The Generals cut the Bridgewater lead to 3-1 just over a minute into the final frame. Maggie Waxter was open in front of the net before she pulled back and fired a shot into the net to cut the Bridgewater advantage to two goals at the 36:03 mark of the contest. The goal was Waxter's sixth of the year.
Four minutes later, Prillaman ran the Bridgewater lead back to three with her second goal of the contest. Augsburger pushed a centering pass to Prillaman and the junior fired a shot into the cage at the 40:45 markof the game to build the Eagles lead to 4-1.
Both teams went back and forth with opportunities over the remainder of the game but it was eventually Bridgewater taking home a 4-1 conference victory over the Generals.
Prillaman led the offense with 10 shots on the evening as the Eagles owned a 16-14 advantage in shots.
Freshman netminder Amanda Harper secured her fourth win of the year after making six saves and allowing one Washington and Lee goal.
Waxter netted the lone Generals goal and led the squad with seven shots.
Megan Axelrod picked up the loss after allowing all four goals over the first 45:34 of play. Axelrod was replaced by Jacqueline Llewellyn and the Generals backup made one save over the remainder of play.
Bridgewater returns to action on Friday at Lynchburg. Start time against the nationally-ranked Hornets is set for 7 p.m.
