BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College picked up its first conference win of the season with a 78-68 victory Tuesday evening over Hollins University at Nininger Hall.
For the second straight game, Bridgewater (6-5, 1-2 ODAC) placed all five starters in double figures. Cassidy Burkholder led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds. She also added six assists and four steals. Heather Cantrell scored a season-high 17 points and Oshene Kelly was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor on her way to 14 points. Jessi Strom scored 12 points and Jessica Lam finished with 11 points and five assists.
Hollins (2-9, 0-3 ODAC) was led by Jewellanna Parfitt's 19 points. Taylor Catron scored 15 points while Britney Campbell finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and eight steals.
The Eagles used an 11-2 run early in the contest to take a double-digit lead. Leading 10-9, Lam hit a 3-pointer and Kelly added a layup to put Bridgewater on top 15-9. Amber Markovitz scored for Hollins, but Lam scored on a driving layup and Burkholder hit two free throws, making the score 19-11. Cantrell capped the rally with an inside move for a 21-11 Eagles lead with 13:25 left in the first half.
Bridgewater then went stone cold from the floor, failing to score on 13 straight possessions over the next seven minutes of play. Luckily for the Eagles, Hollins only scored once during the same stretch, that coming on a 3-pointer by Taylor Catron.
Parfitt knocked down a jumper for Hollins at the 6:39 mark, making the score 21-16 before Burkholder finally snapped the Eagles' scoring drought with a layup at the 6:11 mark.
Hollins pulled to within two late in the half on two free throws by Campbell, but layups by Kelly and Burkholder sent the Eagles to the locker room with a 32-26 halftime lead.
Bridgewater never trailed in the second half, but the Eagles were unable to put Hollins away.
Cantrell scored from inside to give the Eagles a 47-37 lead with 12:20 left in the game and a jumper by Lam pushed the advantage to 12.
The lead hovered around double digits for the next six minutes with the Eagles taking their biggest lead, 67-53, on a Burkholder driving layup with 6:02 left to play.
Hollins refused to go away and a 10-2 spurt pulled the visitors to within six, 69-63. Strom hit two free throws before Parfitt knocked down a 3-ball to pull Hollins to within five, 71-66, with 1:22 remaining.
Bridgewater turned back the Hollins rally by hitting 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to finish off the 78-68 victory.
Bridgewater shot 56.3 percent from the floor and won the rebounding battle by a 45-34 margin. Turnovers plagued the Eagles as they turned the ball over 24 times.
The Eagles return to action Saturday afternoon when they host Lynchburg College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
