ROANOKE, Va. - Bridgewater College outscored Hollins 64-32 over the final three periods Tuesday evening to pull away for an 81-53 victory in ODAC women's basketball action.
The hosts used a strong first-period effort from Sally Sroge as she connected on all five of her shots and scored 11 points to spark Hollins to a 21-17 lead after the first 10 minutes.
The Eagles (3-2, 1-0 in the ODAC) then tightened up their defense, holding Hollins to just four points in the second period, to take a 37-25 lead at the break.
Jessi Strom opened the second period with a 3-pointer to pull the Eagles to within a single point, but Jewellanna Parfitt answered with a bucket for a 23-20 Hollins lead.
Strom connected again from bonus range on the next possession to pull the Eagles even at 23-23.
Strom's 3-pointer was the start of a 17-0 run as the Eagles took control. Briana Moore gave the Eagles the lead for good with a jumper and another 3-ball by Strom made the score 28-23. Sydni Carey knocked down a jumper and two foul shots by Gabrielle Spinner pushed the margin to 32-23. Cassidy Burkholder and Moore hit jumpers before a free throw by Carey gave the Eagles a 37-23 lead.
Hollins finally ended the run when Emmalee Jimenez knocked down a jumper for the final points of the half as the Eagles took a 37-24 lead to the locker room at halftime.
Bridgewater put the game away in the third period, leading by as many as 22 points.
Strom led three Eagles in double figures with 16 points. The BC senior was 4-of-4 from 3-point range. Burkholder scored 13 points while Moore finished with 12 points and a team-high five assists.
Sroge paced Hollins with 20 points while Parfitt added a double-double with 17 points and 13 boards.
Bridgewater dominated the boards by a 52-30 margin. Burkholder and Jessalyn Monday led the way with eight rebounds each.
The Eagles shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the floor and made 6-of-9 from 3-point range. Bridgewater also cashed in at the foul line where the team made 21-of-24 attempts.
Bridgewater is off until Dec. 5 when the Eagles host Guilford College in their home opener. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. The game is also the team's annual Toy Drive contest. Fans bringing a new, unwrapped toy will be granted free admission to the contest.
