Eagles Dominant in Home Quarterfinal Victory

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. –
The Bridgewater College field hockey team dominated its ODAC quarterfinal from start to finish, dispatching Virginia Wesleyan 8-0 at the Jopson Athletic Complex on Tuesday.

Seniors Allison Kirk and Taylor Prillaman each had hat tricks for the Eagles, with classmate Alenka Ferrufino adding a goal and two assists.

With seven seniors in the starting lineup improving to 4-0 in career home postseason contests, the game evoked memories of the group's first playoff experience back in 2012. Bridgewater routed Roanoke 8-1 on Jopson Field in that game, getting goals from current seniors Loy, Prillaman and Caroline Fletcher.

Bridgewater scored on the first three shots of Tuesday's victory to go up big in the opening 11 minutes.

On the first attack of the game, Prillaman took a pass and calmly dribbled around VWC goalkeeper Skye Swain to open the scoring in the second minute.

With 28:15 left in the first half, Ferrufino broke through towards the right side of the endline and shot off Swain's pad and in for a 2-0 lead. Prillaman would soon make it 3-0 after out-working a defender to a loose ball and slotting it in behind the goalkeeper.

With 10 minutes remaining before the break, Loy intercepted a clearance and found Kirk all alone in front of the cage. Kirk had plenty of time to slip a shot past Swain for a 4-0 scoreline.

After four goals from seniors, freshman Tessa Tierson got into the action in the final minute of the first period. The rookie made a great solo run down the left side, cutting past several defenders before shooting past Swain.

Prillaman completed her hat trick in the second half, redirecting a Ferrufino pass into the cage for a 6-0 Bridgewater lead.

Kirk scored her second and third goals of the night just 83 seconds apart to complete the 8-0 win. First she finished off a nice passing sequence for the Eagles (on Ferrufino's assist), and then lofted a shot that bounced in off Swain on BC's next trip down the field.

One of the few VWC attacks came with 15 minutes left in the first half as Melissa Rideout broke through on a 2-on-1. Mackenzie Zabicki got back to ward her off, breaking up the dangerous chance despite being whistled for a penalty corner.

Marisa Sims improved to 3-1 in goal, all versus ODAC competition, and earned her first shutout while making four saves. Swain finished with 10 stops for Wesleyan.

Bridgewater improves to 10-8 and moves on to face nationally-ranked Lynchburg on Friday in an ODAC semifinal on the campus of top-seeded Washington & Lee. Virginia Wesleyan ends its 2015 campaign with a 6-13 mark.
