Late Rally Lifts Quakers to 69-67 Victory Over Eagles

BRIDGEWATER, Va.
– Guilford College outscored Bridgewater College 12-4 over the final three minutes Saturday afternoon to edge the Eagles 69-67 in ODAC women's basketball action at Nininger Hall.

Bridgewater (3-3, 1-1 in the ODAC) took a quick 4-0 lead on a free throw by Cassidy Burkholder and a long 3-pointer by Jessi Strom and held the upper hand until midway in the second period.

After the Quakers got on the scoreboard with two free throws by Heaven Walters, the Eagles answered with a 9-2 run to take a nine-point lead.

After Oshene Kelly made 1-of-2 at the line, Burkholder scored on an inside move and Jessica Lam added two foul shots for a 9-2 Eagles lead. Walters scored on a layup for the Quakers before layups by Briana Moore and Kelly pushed the margin to 13-4.

Guilford (6-1, 1-0 in the ODAC) closed to within four, 16-12, on a jumper by Lauren Ramsey but a baseline jumper by Sydni Carey and an inside hoop by Kelly put the Eagles on top 20-12 at the end of the first period.

The Quaker stormed back with a 13-0 run to open the second period. A 3-pointer by Ramsey gave Guilford its first lead of the game, 21-20, with 5:54 remaining. Layups by Ramsey and Ymani Breedlove capped the run and pushed the Quakers lead to five, 25-20, with 4:26 left in the first half.

Strom broke a six-minute Bridgewater scoring drought with a 3-pointer and a driving layup by Carey tied the score at the 3:24 mark. Carey added a jumper with 2:25 on the clock to push the Eagles back out front, 27-25.

Jordyn Brown's layup tied the score before buckets by Carey and Strom gave the Eagles a four-point, 31-27, lead with less than a minute left in the half. Brown knocked down a short jumper with 24 seconds left to cut the Bridgewater lead to two, 31-29, at the break.

The Eagles edged ahead early in the third period when a bucket by Moore made the score 37-32. Bridgewater maintained a slim lead until a 7-0 spurt put the Eagles up by eight. Leading 41-40, a layup by Kara Campbell and a 3-pointer by Lam pushed the Bridgewater advantage to 46-40. Kaitlyn Lehan then beat the Quakers down the court and took a pass from Burkholder and scored on an easy layup for a 48-40 Eagles lead with 2:45 left in the third period.

Guilford's Anais Weatherly and BC's Burkholder traded buckets before Essence Abraham stroked a 3-pointer for the Quakers to cut the margin to five. Moore connected on two foul shots in the closing seconds to send Bridgewater to the fourth quarter with a 52-45 lead.

Buckets by Amy Steller and Ramsey quickly pulled the Quakers to within three before two free throws by Burkholder gave the Eagles a 54-49 lead early in the final period.

Abraham then scored five straight points and Ramsey added a layup to push Guilford into the lead, 56-54 with 7:06 remaining.

The teams traded 1-of-2 trips at the foul line before a 15-footer from Burkholder pulled the Eagles even at 57-57.

After a paired of missed shots by the Quakers, Burkholder scored on a driving layup, giving the Eagles a 59-57 lead. Guilford then turned the ball over and Strom fed Lam for a layup, putting the Eagles lead at four, 61-57, with 4:55 to play.

The teams traded empty possessions and then a layup by Moore put the Eagles up 63-57 with 3:05 remaining.

Abraham knocked down an open three to cut the deficit in half, but Lam responded with a driving layup for a 65-60 Bridgewater advantage with 2:17 left.

Weatherly made 1-of-2 at the line, and following a missed shot by the Eagles, Walters scored off a dish from Ramsey to pull the Quakers to within two, 65-63.

The Eagles then turned the ball over and Guilford crept to within a single point when Steller made 1-of-2 free throws. Another turnover gave the ball back to the Quakers and a layup by Walters gave Guilford a one-point lead with less than a minute remaining.

After another Bridgewater turnover, Abraham hit two foul shots to push the Quakers margin to three, 68-65 with 26 seconds left. Bridgewater then answered as Burkholder snaked along the baseline for a layup to make it a one-point game, 68-67.

The Eagles were forced to foul and sent Kate Clark to the line with 13 seconds remaining. Clark made the second of two free throws for a two-point Quakers lead. Bridgewater put the ball in Burkholder's hands, but her jumper from the lane in traffic was off the mark as the Quakers escaped Nininger Hall with the 69-67 victory.

Burkholder paced the Eagles with 17 points while Lam and Moore each finished with 10. Ramsey led the Quakers with 18 points and Abraham added 17 off the bench. Walters also reached double figures with 10 points.

The Quakers owned the glass, finishing the game with a 51-29 edge in rebounds. Breedlove pulled down 12 while Walters finished off a double-double with 10 rebounds. Burkholder grabbed six boards to lead the Eagles.

Bridgewater returns to action on Dec. 16 when the Eagles travel to Ferrum College for a non-conference game.
