Box Score 2 WASHINGTON D.C. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team finished the Guetle Invitational 2-2 for an overall record of 2-6, and sophomore defensive specialist Macon Frey earned All-Tournament honors.
Held in Washington D.C., the Eagles won their second straight match in a five set battle, 3-2 (14-25, 25-20, 26-28, 25-21, 5-10), against host team Catholic (6-3).
The Eagles got off to a sluggish start against the Cardinals. The team had had a poor hitting percentage of .032 while giving up a .355 hitting percentage to the Cardinals in the first set.
However, in the second set the Eagles got out of their funk to rack up 16 kills on a hitting percentage of .286 and tie the match.
During the third frame, the programs went back and forth. A kill from sophomore middle hitter Rachel Kinsey tied the score 25-all, but a Cardinals block from Tara Rempel and Michelle Seal gave them the match point, 28-26.
The Eagles recovered from the lengthy third set to jump out to a 6-1 advantage in the fourth. The team wouldn't surrender the lead for the rest of the set and held the Cardinals to a hitting percentage of .026 to keep the match alive.
In the fifth set, the Eagles continued to ride their momentum as they dominated the final period. The Cardinals came within two, 10-8, but the Eagles sparked a 5-2 run to close out the match and earn the victory.
Sophomore middle blocker Carleigh Studtmann paced the offense with 19 kills and a pair of service aces. Freshman Jenna Hamra had a career-high 54 assists to go along with nine kills. Frey also had 34 digs and six assists.
The Eagles finished the doubleheader with a matchup against Marymount (Va.) (7-2), where the team fell 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-23).
In the first set, the Saints stormed out to a 12-4 lead thanks to multiple errors from the Eagles. The Eagles committed 11 errors in the opening period to give Saints the early advantage.
The second set started off as a close fight. Freshman Danielle McKelvey hammered a kill to tie the score 9-all.
Nonetheless, the Saints scored eight unanswered points to take control of the frame, 22-13.
Deep in the third set, a service ace gave the Eagles a close lead, 23-22. The Saints then called a timeout, made key adjustments and rattled off three straight points to win the match.
Hamra produced a double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs, Kinsley and McKelvey finished the match with six kills each and Frey added 10 digs.
The Eagles return to action with their first home game in a conference tilt against Roanoke on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
