Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team kicked off the 2015 season at the Captain's Classic tournament hosted by Christopher Newport in the Freeman Center in Newport News, Va.
Bridgewater dropped both its matches during the first day of the two-day event. The team fell to both Mary Washington (25-17, 25-11, 25-22) and Susquehanna (25-12, 25-13, 25-17) 3-0.
In the matchup against Mary Washington, a trio of players led Bridgewater in total points with sophomore Sarah Temple and freshmen Victoria Wilson and Danielle McKelvey tallying four points.
Sophomore Macon Frey paced the team in digs with 19, and Courtney Thornburg and Sydney McTigue recorded two service aces.
Bridgewater went back and forth with Mary Washington in the first set.
Deep into the frame, freshman setter Jenna Hamra tied the score 17-all with back-to-back service aces.
However, a misfired attack from Wilson gave Mary Washington a 20-18 lead. Mary Washington went on to score five straight points to claim the match lead.
Bridgewater struggled in the second set as the team managed to score only 11 points.
Studtmann spiked a kill to give Bridgewater a 6-5 advantage, but Mary Washington went on the attack for a 7-0 run and numerous unforced errors put Bridgewater in a 2-0 deficit.
In the third set, Bridgewater continued to battle to keep the match alive.
Mary Washington went up 3-0 early in the frame, but Bridgewater cleaned up its game and was able to take an 11-8 lead following a kill from Temple.
A kill from Mary Washington tied the score at 19-all toward the end of the final set.
Bridgewater recorded a service ace to create a 23-22 affair in favor of Mary Washington, but a costly service error on the next serve put the match out of reach.
During the matchup against Susquehanna, Temple powered the offense with nine kills, Frey recorded 20 digs and Studtmann notched two service aces.
Bridgewater opened the first set with a 3-1 advantage thanks to a couple of kills from Temple. A kill from Susquehanna's Marykate Sherkness gave the team its first lead at 7-6.
Susquehanna went on to ignite an 18-6 run to close out the first frame and earn the first match point.
In the second set, Susquehanna got off to a quick start by taking a 12-6 lead. Bridgewater scored three unanswered points to narrow to gap to 12-9, but it wasn't enough to stop Susquehanna's high powered offense.
Down 22-14 in the third set, Bridgewater went on a 3-1 run to bring the score to 23-17.
A service error on the next possession gave Susquhanna the match point, and another unforced error gave Susquehanna the victory.
Bridgewater will return to action tomorrow in the final day of the Captain's Classic with matchups against Meredith (2 p.m.) and Christopher Newport (4 p.m.).
