Late Comeback Gives Dickinson Overtime Win

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Bridgewater College field hockey team was just minutes away from its first victory of the season, but Dickinson struck late in regulation and early in overtime to steal a 3-2 victory on Saturday in Carlisle, Pa.

An Eagles giveaway led to a penalty corner in the fourth minute of overtime. Merritt Davis' shot redirected right in front of Catherine Perlmutter, who slapped it past Hannah Rioux for the game winner.

Bridgewater had taken a 2-0 lead with 20 minutes left in the contest as Shannon Strosser finished off a pass from Madison Clement.

The Eagles seemed well in control, but Dickinson ramped up the pressure and soon earned a penalty stroke that was slotted home by Amber Day.

The call came after four Rioux saves in a span of just over two minutes, including three straight stops on Emilie Arrix and Perlmutter (twice).

Bridgewater still led when a penalty corner was whistled with five minutes to go. Dey inserted to Alexis Bonser, who found Caroline Karwel to tie things up at 2-all.

Despite their disappointment, Bridgewater was all over the Red Devils in the final minutes of regulation. After earning a penalty corner with no time remaining, Taylor Prillaman fed Strosser and goalie Emily Buss made a tough blocker save to deny the winner.

Strosser also had a shot from the right side with two and a half minutes left that was pushed away by the Dickinson goalkeeper. Two fouls were whistled just outside the box as the Eagles sought a late penalty corner; Dickinson nearly broke once but Katie Ellis did a good job of breaking up the dangerous counterattack.

After the first corner of OT, a Dickinson shot deflected in front of the goalmouth and Caroline Fletcher cleared the chance out towards the sideline.

Bridgewater had taken a halftime lead after earning a corner late in the opening period. Rachael Loy converted a Caroline Fletcher pass just over seven minutes before the break for a 1-0 scoreline.

Rioux followed with a save on Jamie Wright to protect the first half shutout.

The freshman was making her first start in goal and finished with 14 saves while facing 17 shots on target.

Corners have been the biggest culprit as Bridgewater falls to 0-3 against a tough early-season schedule. The Eagles gave one up with no time remaining to fall behind nationally-ranked Christopher Newport at halftime in the 2015 opener, and have now conceded four times on the play in the past two days.

Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday and the path doesn't get any easier as BC will travel to face #17 Mary Washington. UMW has already made its mark early this season with a 10-0 blanking of ODAC rival Randolph-Macon.
