Box Score LYNCHBIRG, Va. - Lynchburg College maintained its hold on first place in the ODAC standings as the Hornets defeated Bridgewater College, 62-49, Saturday afternoon.
Lynchburg (13-3, 6-0 in the ODAC) used a 14-4 run to close the opening period to take control of the contest.
A 3-pointer by Briana Moore gave the Eagles a 9-6 lead in the first period, but a 3-point answer by the Hornets' Charmaine Hairston tied the score with 6:50 on the clock.
The Hornets outscored the Eagles 14-4 during the remainder of the period to open up a 23-13 lead.
Lynchburg continued to control play early in the second stanza, outscoring the Eagles 11-2 to open up its biggest lead, 34-15.
Two layups by Cassidy Burkholder and a 3-pointer by Moore pulled the Eagles to within 34-22, but a layup by Sarah Coronel at the buzzer sent the Hornets to the break with a 36-22 lead.
A driving layup by Jessica Lam with 5:02 left in the third period sliced the Hornets lead to single digits at 40-31. Lynchburg's Chaney Forbush and BC's Gabrielle Spinner traded buckets to keep the margin at nine, but the Eagles would get no closer the rest of the way.
Burkholder recorded her third double-double in the past four games as she led the Eagles with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Moore scored 11 points and Lam added 10.
Forbush led three Hornets in double figures with 16 points.
Both teams struggled shooting the basketball. Bridgewater made 18-of-53 attempts for 34 percent. That was slightly better than Lynchburg's 22-of-65 shooting for 33.8 percent.
The biggest differences came on the boards and at the foul line. Lynchburg outrebounded the Eagles 48-36 with 19 of those boards coming at the offensive end where the Hornets netted 20 second-chance points. Lynchburg also went to the foul line twice as many times as the Eagles. The Hornets made 17-of-26 free throws while Bridgewater hit 10-of-13 from the line.
Bridgewater (7-7, 3-3 in the ODAC) returns to action Tuesday evening when the Eagles host Randolph-Macon.
