BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Randolph-Macon College built up a 16-point lead early in the second half and then held on down the stretch to edge Bridgewater College, 82-80, in ODAC women's basketball action.
The Yellow Jackets made 75 percent of their shots in the first period and led 26-19 after the first 10 minutes.
Bridgewater's Oshene Kelly and Macon's Kelsey Wisner traded hoops before a three-point play by Jessica Lam put the Eagles on top 5-2.
Another bucket by Wisner and a three-point play by Jackets' center Katie Anderson gave the visitors a 7-5 edge, but Cassidy Burkholder worked the paint to tie the score at 7-7.
Randolph-Macon (8-7, 4-3 in the ODAC) then hit the Eagles with a 13-0 run to take a 13-point lead. Anderson scored two buckets and Hannah Livermon and Taylor Intermill added layups, making the score 15-7. A jumper by Khajae Hester and a 3-pointer by Kayla Wade pushed the margin to 20-7 with 4:57 left in the first period.
Jessalyn Monday finally snapped the Eagles drought with four straight points to slice the margin to nine, 20-11. The teams traded points and a jumper by Anderson kept the Jackets out front by 11, 26-15. Kelly and Burkholder closed the period with layups to pull the Eagles to within seven, 26-19, after the opening period.
Livermon opened the second period with back-to-back 3-pointers to push the Macon margin back to 13 points, 32-19. Anderson then scored from in close, giving the visitors their biggest lead of the half, 34-19.
Bridgewater (7-8, 3-4 in the ODAC) responded with seven straight points to claw back to within eight. Briana Moore and Kelly worked inside for hoops before Burkholder cashed in from deep, making the score 34-26, with 6:04 left in the first half.
Hester and Bridgewater's Jessica Lam traded 3-pointers and then Anderson and Lam traded inside buckets to keep the margin at eight points. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Eagles 4-1 over the final two minutes to lead 43-32 at the break.
The visitors opened the second half with a 15-footer by Intermill and a 3-ball from Hester to take their biggest lead of the game, 48-32, with 8:56 left in the third period.
The Eagles then held the Jackets to one bucket over the next five minutes during a 12-2 run to cut the margin down to six. Two free throws by Moore and buckets by Burkholder and Kelly trimmed the deficit to 48-38. Lauren Vugteveen's jumper made it 50-38, but Lam and Kaitlyn Lehan combined to go 4-of-4 at the foul line and a layup by Burkholder left the Eagles down 50-44, with 3:02 remaining in the third period.
Anderson worked inside for two buckets and Wisner scored from the paint to quickly push the margin back to 12 points, 56-44. Jessi Strom knocked down a 3-pointer and Monday scored in traffic to slice the margin back to seven, 56-49, with 1:04 left on the third period clock.
Four straight foul shots by Eagles' freshman Sydni Carey pulled the Eagles to with three before Wade made 1-of-2 at the line, giving the Jackets a 57-53 lead heading into the final period.
The Eagles finally pulled even at the 5:53 mark of the final period when Burkholder made 1-of-2 foul shots to tie the score at 63-63.
Over the next 1:30, Anderson scored seven unanswered points, once again forcing the Eagles to play catch-up as Macon led by seven 70-63. Moore hit a 3-pointer for the Eagles, but Hester answered with a 3-ball to keep the margin at seven.
The margin was still seven when Burkholder scored four straight points to pull the Eagles to within 75-72 with 2:21 still to play.
After Hester missed a pair of free throws, Moore drove the paint and scored, making it a one-point game, 75-74, with 1:51 left. Hester drove inside for a layup, but Lehan scored and was fouled on the Eagles next possession, giving the hosts a chance to tie with 1:06 left. Lehan missed the free throw, however, and Wisner grabbed the rebound for the Jackets.
Macon worked the shot clock and Hester again got to the bucket for a layup, giving the visitors a 79-76 lead. After Burkholder missed a shot in traffic, Anderson hit two free throws to push the Jackets lead to five.
A layup by Moore made it a one-possession game, but Livermon hit the second of two free throws with 10 seconds left for a four-point lead, 82-78.
Moore hit a baseline jumper with three seconds left, but time ran out on the Eagles as the Jackets escaped with the 82-80 victory.
Burkholder continued her stellar play with her third straight double-double performance. The Bridgewater senior finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and four steals on the night. Moore finished with 14 points, followed by Lam with 12 and Kelly with 10.
The Eagles held Livermon, the ODAC's leading scorer entering the game, to nine points, less than half her season average. However, Anderson, the ODAC's second-leading scorer and leading rebounder, and Hester combined to carry the load with double-doubles. Anderson scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while Hester scored 17 points and dished out 11 assists.
The Eagles are back in action Saturday afternoon when they hit the road to play the Roanoke College Maroons.
