Box Score 2 ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Bridgewater College volleyball team won its sixth consecutive match in straight sets before being dealt its first lost in a three-week span during a tri-match hosted by St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday.
Bridgewater (16-4) blanked Penn St.-Harrisburg with a 3-0 win and had its eight-match winning streak snapped by St. Mary's following a 3-0 defeat.
Match One: Bridgewater 3, Penn St.-Harrisburg 0 (13-25, 14-25, 16-25)
The Eagles recorded a .329 attack percentage and had three players finish with at least seven kills against Penn St.-Harrisburg (6-11).
Rachel Gaston led all players with 10 kills and Rachel Kinsey was automatic on every attempt, finishing the contest 7-for-7 at the net. Carleigh Studtmann also chipped in seven kills on nine attempts (.667).
Jenna Hamra posted a match-high 25 assists in just two sets to surpass a career milestone 1,000 assists, becoming the 10th player in program history to break the mark. The sophomore now has a career total 1,019 assists.
Deja Booker and Bailey Long also contributed to the Eagles' offensive efforts with six kills each.
The Eagles defense held the Lions to nine total kills through the first two periods in claiming a 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, Taylor McNeely landed back-to-back service aces to cap a 6-0 rally that put BC ahead 12-9. An attack error by Booker cut the deficit to 13-12, but Girard served three straight aces to highlight a 5-0 spurt.
Gaston scored the match-wining point on another ace, and the Eagles finished the match with 12 total as a team.
Match Two: St. Mary's 3, Bridgewater 0 (13-25, 14-25, 16-25)
Abby Mills continued her breakout season with her eighth double-double of the year, registering 13 kills and 10 digs. Girard recorded a team-high 19 assists, Macon Frey dug up 15 attacks and Studtmann contributed six kills.
Alli Graf led St. Mary's (17-7) with 19 kills and 23 digs, which were both match-highs. Meghan Kelley tallied nine kills, while Hannah Krauss earned six kills and six block assists. Mini Graf was just shy of a double-double with 36 assists and nine digs.
During the first set, Hamra set up Victoria Wilson to tie the game at 15-all. A spike by Alli Graf made it 22-19 Seahawks, forcing an Eagles timeout. SMC dialed an ace out of the timeout and Alli Graf smashed two straight kills following a side-out.
Bridgewater trailed 22-10 late in the second period, but made a strong attempt to overcome the double-digit margin. Booker infiltrated the Seahawks' defense with a kill and Mills added two more to chip away at the SMC lead, 22-13.
Back-to-back BC attack errors gave the Seahawks game-point, but the Eagles generated a 5-0 run on four kills before Kelley scored the game-winning point.
The Seahawks hit .424 in the third period to post a game-high 16 kills on just two errors to complete the three-set win.
The Eagles continue their road stretch with a visit to cross-town rival Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
