BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College volleyball team held off a furious Guilford comeback attempt in winning a five-set thriller, 3-2 (22-25, 15-25, 25-21, 28-26, 15-11), during the ODAC tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday evening.
Fourth seeded Bridgewater (21-9) had four players collect double-digit kills in its first playoff appearance since 2013.
Abby Mills paced the Eagles with a double-double on a match-high 19 kills and 11 digs, while Carleigh Studtmann and Allison Clark had 14 kills each. Studtmann also assisted on five blocks and made two solo stops.
Rachel Gaston posted 10 kills on 31 attempts, and Jenna Hamra also notched a double-double effort behind 61 assists and 10 digs.
Macon Frey anchored the defense by leading all players with 28 digs, and Victoria Wilson chipped in 12 more. Taylor McNeely contributed three service aces and dug up eight attacks.
The Eagles stormed out to a 2-0 match lead after winning set one by score of 25-22 and then set two by a double-digit margin of 25-15.
Nonetheless, Guilford (12-14) staved off the sweep in claiming the third set on a 25-21 score.
In the fourth set, the Eagles rallied from a five-point deficit to tie the period at 24-all on a Studtmann kill. The Quakers evened the frame again at 26-all following a kill by Christian Ritter, and then produced a block and another kill to force a fifth set.
The match continued to go back and forth in the final period as Clark smashed a kill for an 11-11 tie. GC committed an attack error on the next possession, which led to the team calling a timeout.
Out of the break, Frey dialed up a service to give Bridgewater a 13-11 edge. Studtmann assisted Gaston on a block for the next point and then hammered the match-winning kill to advance the Eagles to the semifinal round.
Bridgewater, who rank eighth in the South Region, will travel to Ashland, Va., to take on No. 1 seed Randolph-Macon (21-7) in the semifinals on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
