BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College won its fourth straight game with a 66-42 victory Saturday afternoon over Hollins University in ODAC women's basketball action.
Bridgewater (11-9, 7-5 in the ODAC) took control early, holding the visitors scoreless in the first five minutes while building up an 11-0 cushion. Cassidy Burkholder opened the scoring with a short jumper and Oshene Kelly added two buckets for a 6-0 lead. Jessi Strom knocked down a 3-pointer and Briana Moore scored with a 15-footer to cap the early run.
After Sally Sroge hit two free throws, the Eagles ran off nine more points to lead 20-2. Moore hit another jumper, Burkholder scored on a layup and Jessica Lam made two foul shots, putting the Eagles ahead 17-2. A 3-pointer from Strom with 1:55 left in the opening period made the score 20-2.
Sroge scored two buckets in the final 25 seconds of the period to pull Hollins to within 20-6.
A 3-pointer by Burkholder matched the Eagles biggest lead at 25-7 and a layup by Sydni Carey kept the margin at 18 points, 27-9.
Hollins (3-16, 0-12 in the ODAC) then put together its best run of the opening half as an 8-2 spurt cut the margin to 12. Jewellanna Parfitt and Auburn Smith scored for the visitors, cutting the Eagles' lead to 27-13. After a jumper by BC's Carey, Sroge and Nikki Valencia scored for Hollins to trim the margin to 29-17 with 5:55 left in the second period.
Two buckets by Moore pushed the margin back to 16 points before Parfitt hit a pair at the line, making the score 33-19. Strom connected on her third 3-pointer of the half to push the margin to 36-19 with 2:35 remaining in the half. Lam then connected on a jumper to double the score, putting the Eagles ahead 38-19.
Valencia hit two free throws before Lam added 1-of-2 at the line to send the Eagles to the break with a 39-21 lead.
The Eagles continued to control play in the second half and led by as many as 27 points in the third period before settling for the final 66-42 victory.
The Eagles displayed a balanced scoring attack with five players reaching double figures. Moore led the way with 13 points and Burkholder scored 12. Strom added 11 points with Lam and Kelly each scoring 10. Kelly notched a double-double as she secured 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles to a 52-35 advantage on the glass. Carey turned in a strong floor game with four points, seven assists and just one turnover in 24 minutes.
Sroge led Hollins with 14 points and Parfitt scored 10.
Bridgewater returns to action Tuesday evening when the Eagles travel to Lexington, Va., to face Washington and Lee in a key conference matchup. Both teams enter the game with 7-5 conference records. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
