Volleyball Claims ODAC Opener at Lynchburg

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. – A trio of Abby Mills, Bailey Long and Carleigh Studtmann led Bridgewater to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18) road win over Lynchburg in its ODAC opener on Wednesday evening.

Bridgewater improved its record to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference as Mills (17), Long (12) and Studtmann (12) each tallied double-digit kills. Mills also added 16 digs to record her third double-double of the season.

Junior Macon Frey had an impressive performance on defense with a season-high 28 digs, and sophomore Jenna Hamra finished the contest with 41 assists.

Sophomore Victoria Wilson contributed 15 digs, eight kills and two service aces, while sophomore Sydney McTigue notched 11 digs.

Lynchburg's (7-3, 0-1 ODAC) Jennifer Garrett posted a match-high 21 kills to go along with 16 digs. Garrett was the engine to the Hornets' offense as she was the only player to collect more than 10 kills.

In the first set, Bridgewater got off to a quick start by taking a large 21-7 advantage. Lynchburg rallied to cut the deficit to 23-17, but Mills spiked a kill for game point and Studtmann landed the set-winning kill a few possessions later.

The second set was much more competitive as Lynchburg clung on to a 16-15 advantage following a kill from Long. Back-to-back spikes from Studtmann sparked a 5-0 run to give BC the lead, 21-17.

Studtmann dropped in a service ace to go ahead 24-20, but a kill and two BC errors closed the gap to 24-23. Nonetheless, Hamra sealed the second period with a kill to put the Eagles ahead 2-0 in the match.

The Eagles' offense was its most potent during the second frame, finishing the set with an impressive 18 kills on a .256 hitting percentage.

However, the Hornets responded with a 23-19 edge late in the third set and went on to claim the period in order to avoid the sweep.

The Eagles bounced back in the fourth set by opening the frame with a 9-4 margin. The Hornets then sparked a 6-1 rally to cut the deficit to 11-10.

Attack errors would cost the Hornets as the mistakes allowed the Eagles to increase their lead to 16-11. Later in the period, Long blasted a kill to provide BC a 19-16 advantage and eventually went on to score the match-winning point for the conference triumph.

The Eagles continue conference play with its home opener against the Hornets of Shenandoah on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
