Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College volleyball team gave Washington & Lee a good test and defeated Meredith, Saturday in a tri-match at Nininger Hall.
The tri-match featured three teams that had only lost a combined three times heading into today, with a combined record of 25-3.
The Eagles defeated Meredith in five sets 25-23, 25-27, 22-25, 25-19, 15-7, following a loss to W&L by a score of 3-1 (26-28, 25-20, 25-18, 25-20).
Senior Abby Mills had 28 kills in the Meredith match, one shy of the school record. She also had 16 digs. Macon Frey had a team-leading 23 digs, while Jenna Hamra (19) and Sydney McTigue (11) were also in double-figures.
Hamra dished out 55 assists in the five-set match, along with seven kills and three service aces. Carleigh Studtmann had 13 kills and hit .478.
The Eagles took the first set despite trailing 23-21. Mills had three kills in a 4-0 run, including the clincher after Madison Haynes's spike had put BC on top 24-23.
Despite losing the next two games, Bridgewater took the fourth set, with a 4-0 run that included a Hamra service ace helping the Eagles pull away late.
Kills from Allison Clark and Studtmann got the Eagles out to a quick start in the deciding game, and a pair of Meredith attack errors stretched the Eagles' lead to 5-1.
In the opening match, Bridgewater had taken the first set against Washington & Lee and led past the halfway point of game #2.
Mills had 15 kills and 15 digs in that contest, while Victoria Wilson added 10 kills and 10 digs.
Wilson also had five block assists as the Eagles racked up eight blocks as a team. Haynes and Studtmann added four block assists each.
Bridgewater trailed 23-17 in the opening game but rallied all the way back. Bailey Long's kill made it 24-23 W&L, and an attack error tied the score. Consecutive kills from Mills clinched the set for Bridgewater.
The Eagles led 19-18 in game two after a Generals service error, following a block by Wilson and Haynes two points earlier. Washington & Lee responded with a 6-0 spurt to avoid going into a 2-0 hole.
Sophomore Deja Booker was inserted into the match for the first time in the third set and nearly turned it around for the Eagles. She had eight kills to just one error in the set, with a hitting percentage of .412.
Booker had kills early in the game to give Bridgewater leads of 4-1 and 5-2. She tied the score at 12-12 after a W&L run, before the Generals finally pulled away.
In the neutral site match, Washington & Lee swept Meredith 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-12) to hand the Avenging Angels their first loss of the 2016 season.
Bridgewater is 9-3 and will travel to Mary Baldwin on Tuesday.
