BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior Abby Mills collected 35 total kills to lead Bridgewater College to a pair of 3-0 victories against ODAC rival Emory & Henry and Southern Virginia in a tri-match at Nininger Hall on Saturday.
Bridgewater (13-3, 3-1 ODAC) improved its winning streak to five straight and also strengthened its conference record following the triumph over E&H. The team now ranks third in the league standings, trailing only ODAC's unbeaten Randolph-Macon (4-0 ODAC) and Washington and Lee (3-0 ODAC).
Bridgewater 3, Emory and Henry 0 (19-25, 17-25, 17-25)
Mills paced BC with a match-high 20 kills (.357) and seven digs. Sophomore Jenna Hamra dished out 33 assists and was one dig shy of a double-double with nine. Junior Macon Frey dug up 25 attacks, and Carleigh Studtmann had an efficient outing with seven kills on a .357 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Victoria Wilson posted double-digit digs with 14 and added four kills and four assists, while freshman Allison Clark finished the conference clash with six kills (.250).
In the opening set, the Eagles jumped out to a 20-11 advantage after a Wilson kill. Hamra found Mills for game-point and an E&H attack error gave the Eagles game.
The second set was evenly matched as Frey landed a kill to create a 12-all affair. However, the Eagles scored four unanswered points to build a 3-point lead, 16-13. Mills spiked three straight kills to break the 20-mark and BC closed the frame with another 4-0 spurt.
Bridgewater was in full control during the third set as back-to-back kills from Studtmann highlighted a 7-0 run for a 21-12 lead. Mills scored three of the Eagles last four points to capture their third conference victory.
Bridgewater 3, Southern Virginia 0 (12-25, 21-25, 24-26)
During the first set, the Eagles imposed their will by taking a commanding 20-8 advantage. The Knights would put together a 4-1 run before BC reached 25 points on a 4-0 spark.
Deep in the second set, SVU tied the game at 20-20 after a Madison Haynes attack error. Nonetheless, the Knights committed four critical errors to help BC go up 2-0 in the match.
The Eagles had to battle from behind in the third set to finish off the sweep. A Hannah Allred kill gave the Knights a 16-12 edge in the heart of the period. However, back-to-back service aces by Clark tied the game, 17-all.
The period continued to go back and forth as Wilson hammered a kill cross court to erase game-point with a 24-24 tie. An attack error by Allred earned BC game-point, and Hamra fed Studtmann to gain the win.
Mills notched a double-double behind 15 kills (.204) and 16 digs, and Hamra led all players with 30 assists. Frey also posted a match-high with 20 digs, while Wilson and Studtmann had seven kills each. Wilson also chipped in 14 digs.
The Knights' Penny Gwynn tallied a match-high 17 kills and collected 16 digs to lead her team.
The Eagles are back in action with an ODAC matchup at Hollins on Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m.
