Box Score ROANOKE, Va. – The Bridgewater College volleyball team cruised past conference foe Hollins in claiming a 3-0 (25-8, 25-12, 25-22) sweep on Wednesday evening.
Bridgewater (14-3, 4-1 ODAC) advances its winning streak to six in a row and will enter the month of October with its best season start since 2008. The '08 squad also suffered only three loses at the end of September with a 13-3 mark, and finished the year 23-8 after falling to Washington and Lee in the ODAC tournament semifinals.
Against Hollins, the Eagles shuffled their lineup to give some of the younger players valuable game experience. Freshman Rachael Girard recorded a match-high 25 assists and freshman Taylor McNeely tallied 18 digs.
Senior Abby Mills posted nine kills (.500), while Carleigh Studtmann and Danielle McKelvey added seven each. Studtmann finished the contest with a career-best .875 hitting percentage.
The Eagles got off to a fast start in the first set by taking a 10-4 advantage. Back-to-back service aces from sophomore Sydney McTigue gave the Eagles a double-digit lead, 17-7.
Hollins managed to score only one more point on a BC attack error through the remainder of the period. The Eagles finished the first frame with 12 kills on a .450 attack percentage and just two errors.
The Eagles' offense exploded in the second set with 16 kills (.500) and only one attack error compared to Hollins' eight kills (.061) and six attack errors.
During the second period, Girard set up Studtmann in the middle for a 7-3 lead. An Eagles' service error closed the gap to 8-7, but BC finished the frame on a 17-5 surge to claim game two.
With their backs against the wall, Hollins tied the third set at eight-all on a Cana Lankford spike. Sophomore Allison Coburn blasted a kill to give BC a 17-13 edge, but Hollins scored four unanswered points to even the game again, 17-17.
Back-to-back kills by sophomore Deja Booker powered Bridgewater to a 22-19 advantage, and Coburn went on to record the match-winning kill in her season debut.
The Eagles will take a short break before hosting ODAC rival Randolph on Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m. The upcoming contest will allow BC to avenge last year's lost, which cost the team a 2015 playoff appearance due to tiebreaker technicalities.
