Box Score 2 HARRISONBURG, Va. – Bridgewater College concluded the EMU Invitational on Saturday with an impressive pair of 3-0 victories to start the season 3-1 overall.
Senior Abby Mills was named to the All-Tournament team after collecting 51 kills (3.64 k/s) and 37 digs (2.64 k/s) at the end of the two-day invite.
Match One: Bridgewater 3, Goucher 0 (25-10, 18-25, 16-25)
The Eagles offense was lights out during the first match after posting a .322 hitting percentage on 39 total kills.
In the first set, the Eagles rode the serve of junior Carleigh Studtmann to a cushy 17-5 lead. An attack error from Mills ended the 12-0 run, but BC answered with five more unanswered point to go up 22-6.
Senior Bailey Long blasted a kill to earn game-point, and a Goucher service error closed out the frame. The Eagles tallied five service aces alone in the first period.
During the second period, sophomore Jenna Hamra landed a kill for a five-point advantage, 8-3. Mills spike another kill to go up 10-4, and BC rattled off six-straight points to build its lead to 16-6.
Goucher got on a 6-1 rally to cut the deficit to 21-16. However, the Eagles regained its stride as back-to-back kills from Mills and sophomore Kiara Greene allowed game-point and Hamra scored the game-winning point.
The third set was the closest game as a kill by Meredith Johnson, of Goucher, created a 9-7 affair in favor of BC. Later in the period, freshman Madison Haynes scored from the middle and two straight attack errors from Goucher sealed the sweep.
Match Two: Bridgewater 3, Salem 0 (17-25, 18-25, 16-25)
A trio of Studtmann, Mills and Hamra led the Eagles to its second sweep of the afternoon.
Mills paced all players with 13 kills (.346) and Studtmann added 12 (.611) more. Hamra earned her second double-double of the young season by tallying 37 assists and 10 digs.
The Eagles offense was in rhythm through the entire contest and posted 17 kills on a .387 hitting percentage in the first set.
Following an attack error, Studtmann landed a spike to tie the set at four-all. The Eagles then sparked a 9-2 run to jump out to a 15-6 lead. Salem answered with a 7-1 rally, but another kill from Studtmann gave BC a four-point advantage, 19-15.
Mills landed a kill for game-point before an attack error from the Spirits ended the period.
The beginning of the second set was a back-and-fourth affair until the Eagles broke an 11-all tie with seven-straight points. Hamra fed Mills an assist to go up 20-13, and Mills also delivered the set-clinching kill.
The Eagles opened the third and final period with a 4-0 spurt. Hamra connected with junior Rachel Kinsey for a 10-5 margin and Long recorded a kill to increase the deficit to 17-11.
Freshman Rachel Gaston scored game-point and the match-winning kill for the non-conference triumph.
The Eagles return to the court on Friday at the CUA Guetle Invitational hosted by Catholic University in Washington D.C.
