No. 16 New Jersey City Edges Eagles In Overtime

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Bridgewater College took No. 16 New Jersey City to the wire Saturday afternoon before the Gothic Knights prevailed in overtime, 73-70, on the second day of the EMU Tip-Off Classic at Yoder Arena.

Bridgewater had the nationally-ranked Knights in some trouble late in regulation when freshman Liam Caswell knocked down a 3-pointer for a 58-50 Eagles lead with 4:29 left in the game.

Sam Toney responded with a long 3-pointer for the Knights to trim the margin to five and a three-point play by James Richardson pulled New Jersey City to within two, 58-56 with 3:21 left.

The teams traded empty possessions until Josh Cammon connected on a short jumper to put the Eagles up 60-56 with 1:57 remaining. Toney hit 1-of-2 at the foul line and Denzel Banks converted a steal into a layup, cutting the Eagles lead to one-point, 60-59, with 1:06 left.

Bridgewater moved ahead by three with 46 seconds remaining when Jimmie Sanders drove the lane and converted a layup in traffic, making the score 62-59.

The Knights tied the score when Jeff Haddock, Jr. drained a deep three with just 29 seconds to go, making the score 62-62. The Eagles worked for the last shot and Dimetri Chambers drove into the lane and kicked the ball out to Monte Simpkins near the 3-point line. Simpkins' open look just before the buzzer rattled in-and-out and the teams headed to overtime tied at 62-62.

Haddock opened the extra session with a three-point play, but Chambers responded with two foul shots to pull the Eagles to within one, 65-64. The Eagles got a stop at the defensive end and Cammon knocked down a jumper to put the Eagles up, 66-65, with 3:27 left in OT.

After Chambers made 1-of-2 free throws, Banks went to the line and hit two foul shots to pull the Gothic Knights even, 67-67, with two minutes remaining.

A layup by Banks gave the Knights the lead and two free throws by Toney pushed the New Jersey City margin to four, 71-67, wtih just 17 seconds left. Chambers drained a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game, but the Eagles were forced to foul and Toney hit both foul shots to put the Gothic Knights up 73-70. with seven seconds left. The Eagles had a chance to tie, but Chambers' long 3-point attempt was just long and Gothic Knights escaped with the three-point victory.

Chambers led the Eagles with 13 points and Chandler Murray added 12. Cammon scored 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Sanders added 11 points and five assists.

Banks paced the winners with 22 points and 12 rebounds while Toney added 16 points and 15 boards.

Poor free-throw shooting hindered Bridgewater the entire contes as the Eagles made just 21-of-37 foul shots for 56.8 percent.

Bridgewater, now 1-1, returns to action Tuesday evening when the Eagles travel to Arlington, Va., to play Marymount University. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
