BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College had three players come off the bench to score in double figures Saturday as the Eagles handed Guilford its first loss of the season, 68-62, in Nininger Hall. The victory was also win No. 1000 in Eagles' program history.
Ahlia Moone led the Eagles with 16 points. Lindsay Estes scored 11 points and Erin Dietz added 10 as the Bridgewater bench outscored the Quakers bench 41-18.
The Quakers got off to a quick start, taking an early 6-0 lead. Miracle Walters put the visitors on the board with a pair of foul shots and teammate Carisma Lynn went to the line and made 1-of-2 for a 3-0 lead. Guilford guard Calyn Davis then drained a long 3-pointer, making the score 6-0 and prompting Eagles head coach Sarah Mathews to call a quick timeout.
Estes checked into the game during the timeout and the Eagles' forward scored seven points in less than a minute to put the Eagles ahead. Estes put the Eagles on the board with a baseline jumper and followed that with an open 3-pointer to pull the Eagles to within a point, 6-5. Estes then came up with a steal near midcourt and drove in for a layup to give the Eagles their first lead.
Guilford regained the lead on another Davis 3-pointer, but Dietz answered with a 3-ball, giving Bridgewater a 10-9 lead and the Eagles never trailed again.
Bridgewater moved ahead 15-10 on a 3-pointer by Kayla Darr, but the Quakers reeled off five straight to pull even at 15-15. Bridgewater responded with its own five-point run as Jasmyn Pierce hit a 3-pointer and Estes converted another steal into a layup for a 20-15 Eagles lead at the end of the first quarter.
Guilford pulled even at 25-25 midway through the second quarter before a layup by Claire Mocarski and a 3-pointer from Dietz pushed the lead back to five, 30-25, with 3:11 left in the half.
Bridgewater took its biggest lead of the first half, 34-28, on buckets by Madison Baum and Mocarski, but Guilford's Kristen Roberts buried a 25-footer at the buzzer to pull the Quakers to within 34-29 at the break.
Bridgewater's Mary Ruth Shifflett and Guilford's Roberts traded 3-pointers to open the second half before a jumper by Estes gave the Eagles a 39-32 advantage.
Guilford trimmed the margin to two, 44-42, but Darr hit from long range to keep the Eagles in the lead, 47-42, with 5:33 left in third quarter. Two foul shots by Monell Dunlap had the Quakers within four, but Shifflett beat the buzzer with a 15-footer to send the Eagles to the fourth quarter with a 57-51 lead.
Bridgewater used a 5-0 spurt in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to open up a double-digit lead. Moone hit a 3-pointer to push the margin to nine and a 12-footer by Baum gave the Eagles a 62-51 lead.
That cushion proved to be enough as the Quakers could get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
In addition to its bench production, Bridgewater also received key contributions from several other players. Shifflett chipped in with nine points while Baum finished with seven assists and six steals. Mocarski led the Eagles on the boards with 11 rebounds.
Bridgewater, now 2-6 overall and 2-1 in the ODAC, takes a long break for exams and the holidays. The Eagles will play again after Christmas when they travel to Georgia for two games. Bridgewater plays Oglethorpe on Dec. 29 and LaGrange on Dec. 30.
