Eagles Keep Pace In ODAC With Win Over Hollins

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter Saturday and never trailed during a 68-60 ODAC victory at Nininger Hall.

The Eagles, now back to the .500 mark overall with an 8-8 record and 7-2 in conference, kept pace with the other teams at the top of the standings. Washington and Lee was idle Saturday while Roanoke and Emory & Henry both won. Bridgewater, W&L, Roanoke and E&H are now all tied for first place in the ODAC standings.

Hollins' Sydney Strange scored the game's first bucket, but Bridgewater answered with a 12-1 run. Mary Ruth Shifflett put the Eagles on the board with a 3-pointer from the corner and Claire Mocarski scored after grabbing an offensive rebound, giving the Eagles a 5-2 lead. Ahlia Moone tallied from long range to make it 8-2 before Hollins guard Kayla Surles made 1-of-2 at the line. Shifflett scored on a layup and Moone added two foul shots for a 12-3 Eagles lead with 4:45 left in the opening quarter.

Hollins scored five straight points to trim the margin to 12-8, but the Eagles countered with the final six points of the quarter. Moone hit again from long range and Baum converted a three-point play, giving Bridgewater an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles opened the second quarter with a 7-0 surge to open a 17-point lead. Mocarski and Jasmyn Pierce each scored a bucket to open the quarter and Shifflett added a 3-ball, making the score 25-8.

Hollins finally got untracked at the offensive end, outscoring the Eagles 22-8 during the remainder of the half to trail by just three points, 33-30, at halftime.

Surles opened the third quarter with a long 3-pointer to pull Hollins even at 33-33. Bridgewater quickly regained the advantage with a 7-0 spurt. Darr hit a 3-pointer and Makayla Johnson added two foul shots, making the score 38-33. Johnson then worked inside for a layup, giving the Eagles a 40-33 lead with 7:36 left in the third quarter.

A bucket from Darr had the Eagles on top 44-35 and a 3-pointer from Pierce pushed the lead back to double figures, 47-35, with 4:01 remaining on the third quarter clock.

Hollins rallied as back-to-back threes by Lenah Clements and a bucket form Serena Lytton sliced the Eagles lead to four, 47 -43, at the 1:15 mark. Baum then drove inside for a layup, sending the Eagles to the fourth quarter with a 49-43 lead.

After two foul shots by Yasmine Tyler trimmed the margin back to four, Bridgewater reeled off eight straight points to lead by 12. Moone and Nina Novosel hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Pierce scored on a layup, giving the Eagles a 57-45 lead with 7:49 left in the game.

Surles drove the lane for a layup, but Shifflett knocked down a 3-pointer and Diamond Huskey added two free throws to push the advantage to 62-47 with 5:47 remaining.

Hollins then hit the Eagles with an 11-0 run to pull to within four, 62-58, with 1:08 to go. The teams then traded empty offensive possessions, before Shiifflett took a pass along the baseline and dished across the lane to Morcarski for a wide-open layup, making the score 64-58 with 34 seconds left.

Surles hit two free throws to cut the margin to four and Hollins fouled Madison Baum with 22 seconds left. Baum hit the first foul shot, but missed the second. Pierce, however, hustled to chase down the rebound, giving the Eagles an extra possession. Hollins fouled Moone and the Eagles guard hit 1-of-2 for a 66-60 lead. Baum added two foul shots in the closing seconds for the final 68-60 score.

Moone and Mocarski both posted double-doubles to lead the Eagles. Moone finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds while Mocarski added 12 points and 12 boards. Shifflett turned in a solid all-around effort with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Baum scored 10 points and dished out eight assists.

Surles led all scorers with 23 points and Clements scored 14.

Bridgewater is back in action Wednesday when the Eagles host Virginia Wesleyan.
