Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Shenandoah University opened a double-digit lead in the first quarter Wednesday night and held off the Bridgewater Eagles the rest of the way to take an 83-70 victory in ODAC action.
The loss snapped Bridgewater's 10-game winning streak and dropped the Eagles into a tie for second place in the conference standings with Emory & Henry. The Eagles and E&H are both 12-3 in ODAC play while Washington and Lee sits in first place with a 13-3 record.
The Hornets jumped out to a 21-10 lead after one quarter of play and stretched the margin to 13-points, 39-26, at the half.
Shenandoah shot 56 percent from the floor in the first half, making 14-of-25 shots. The Eagles struggled from the field in the first two quarters, making just 10-of-35 shots for 28.6 percent.
A 3-pointer by Jordan Sondrol with just 28 seconds left in the third quarter gave the visitors their biggest lead of the night, 64-43. Bridgewater's Madison Baum knocked down a 3-pointer on the final possession of the quarter, making the score 64-46.
Bridgewater scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to pull within 11 points. Makayla Johnson made two foul shots and Jasmyn Pierce scored after grabbing an offensive rebound as the Eagles closed the gap to 14 points. Kayla Darr then drained a 3-pointer to slice the deficit to 64-53 with 7:57 left in the game.
The Eagles, however, would get no closer the rest of the way as the Hornets closed out the 83-70 victory.
Baum led the Eagles with 26 points and Pierce added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds off the bench. Sondrol paced the winners with 21 points.
Shenandoah won the rebounding battle by a 43-32 margin and the Hornets finished with a huge advantage at the foul line where they took 43 free throws and made 31. The Eagles were 15-of-26 at the line.
Bridgewater is back in action Saturday afternoon for their final home game of the regular season. Following the completion of the Bridgewater-Roanoke men's contest that begins at 2:00 p.m., the Eagles' women will host Lynchburg. Start time is set for approximately 4:30 p.m.
