BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater's Taylor Stafford made an off-balance runner in the paint with 1.4 seconds remaining for the winning basket in the Eagles' 66-65 ODAC victory Thursday evening over Shenandoah.
Stafford's shot capped a fourth-quarter Bridgewater rally as the Eagles overcame a seven-point deficit in the final six minutes of play to take the victory.
Bridgewater is now 2-0 in conference play.
The game was close throughout. Bridgewater's largest lead of the night was six points in the first half while the Hornets owned a seven-point lead midway through the final quarter.
Shenandoah's Sarah Sondrol knocked down a 3-pointer at the 5:58 mark of the fourth quarter, giving the Hornets their biggest lead of the game, 60-53.
The Eagles responded with seven unanswered points to tie the score. Two free throws from Jaden Alsberry and a baseline jumper by Mary Ruth Shifflett trimmed the deficit to three points, 60-57. Jada Gross made two free throws and Diamond Huskey added 1-of-2 from the line to pull the Eagles even at 60-60 with 3:20 remaining.
The Hornets regained the lead with a Sondrol bucket in the paint, but two foul shots by Madison Baum tied the score, 62-62, with 2:10 left in the game.
A free throw by Diandra Mundle and two more by Sondrol put the Hornets on top by three points, 65-62, with just 1:03 left on the clock.
Following a BC timeout, Stafford went to the line and made two foul shots with 45 seconds remaining to make it a one-point game.
On the next possession, Sondrol missed a contested layup inside and Alsberry grabbed the rebound for the Eagles. Ahlia Moone missed a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left, but the Eagles kept possession when the ball went out of bounds after being touched by the Hornets.
The Eagles worked the ball around the perimeter before Stafford drove into the lane and hit what proved to be the game-winning shot. Sondrol's desperation 3-pointer from the corner was off target as Bridgewater escaped with its second close conference win of the season.
Moone led the Eagles with 14 points while Stafford scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Sondrol led all scorers with 24 points. Olivia Weinel tallied 16 points and Regan Johnson added 10.
Bridgewater shot just 29.9 percent from the floor (20-of-67), including 20 percent from long range (7-of-35). Shenandoah hit 48.3 percent of its shots from the field and outrebounded the Eagles 46-38. Bridgewater overcame its cold-shooting performance by forcing 29 Shenandoah turnvoers.
Weather permitting, the Eagles will be back in action Monday evening when they host Emory & Henry.
