Football Defeats Guilford

Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Bridgewater College football team defeated Guilford 19-14 on Saturday for its first victory of the season.

Bridgewater's opening drive went nowhere as BC was forced to punt after no gain on its first three plays. Guilford's first drive went backwards as a facemask and illegal forward pass penalty forced a Quakers' punt. Bridgewater got the first positive yards of the day as Tommy Nelson rushed for a gain of two yards, but a sack made it third down and long. Parker Burke dropped back to pass and was sacked again, but lost the ball. Ricks picked it up and took the loose ball to the house for a touchdown. The PAT was true to make it 7-0 with four minutes gone by.

BC got the ball back and went to work. A pass by Brock Miles to Nick Barahona moved the chains, and a rush by Jalin Quintanilla put the Eagles in opposing territory for the first time. An incompletion on third down forced a punt. A solid boot by Grefe trapped the Quakers deep in their own territory, and the BC defense did its job as it forced a Guilford punt to get he ball back in solid field position.

Wyatt Jervis took a handoff and moved the chains with a 10-yard gain on the second play of the series. A rush by Nelson on third down gave BC another first down, but a false start moved Bridgewater backwards. The Eagles responded on cue as Brock Miles connected with Nelson for a gain of 40 on a screen pass to put the Eagles inside the Guilford five-yard line at the end of the first quarter. The Quakers' defense held the goal line and forced fourth down. Ben Bermudez trotted out and nailed the 22-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game early in the second stanza.

Bridgewater added to the scoreboard again in a different way. A pass break-up by Jayden Booth forced a fourth down, and the BC special teams went to work. A bad snap went over the head of the punter, and the hustle by Munashe Gwashavanu forced the Quakers' punter to fall on it in the end zone to take the safety and make it 7-5. With the momentum rolling, BC pulled out a trick play as Derrick Moore took a handoff and completed a pass over the middle for a gain of 23 yards, but a pair of sacks later in the series forced a punt.

BC's defense forced a three-and-out and went to work on offense. The Eagles drove to the Guilford 30-yard line and faced fourth down and less than a yard. Parker Burke was stopped short as he tried to sneak across the line to gain and Guilford took over on downs. The Quakers got the ball back and went nowhere initially, but a roughing-the-kicker penalty gave Guilford a second chance. The Quakers then marched down the field and capped it off with a nine-yard touchdown pass just before the horn sounded. The point-after was good to make it a 14-5 Guilford lead at the break.

Guilford got the ball out of the break and drove down the field. GC hit a wall as the BC defense held its own when it mattered. Guilford then faced a fourth down and 28 and looked to have converted on a busted play for a touchdown, but the quarterback failed to release the pass before the line of scrimmage, turning the ball over on downs. The two sides traded punts, and Jervis put the Eagles' offense in business after an 18-yard reception. BC continued to push down the field and converted a fourth down in the series as Burke connected with Chris Crossland for a gain of eight. Burke and Barahona connected on the next play for a gain of 13 to make it first down and goal to go. Three plays later, BC punched it in as Jervis caught a five-yard pass from Buke for the touchdown. BC lined up for the PAT, but it was a fake. Grefe took the snap to the house for the successful two-point try to make it 14-13 late in the third quarter.

The Eagles' defense came out and held its line again as a sack by Jayden Booth stalled the drive. A beautiful punt for 70 yards by the Quakers trapped the Eagles deep, but they did not waver. Rushes by Jervis and Nelson moved the chains, and a penalty by the Quakers moved them again as the two sides headed to the fourth quarter. BC was forced to punt as Grefe had a 43-yard boot. Guilford moved the chains on third down early in its next series, but a hurry by Zion Dudley forced an incompletion later in the series and forced the Quakers to punt.

Bridgewater got the ball with decent field postion after a short punt. BC faced third down and long, but a 16-yard rush by Burke moved the chains. Guilford picked off Burke on the next play, but it was all for naught, as defensive pass interference on the play gave BC the ball back and moved the down markers. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Quakers put Bridgewater inside the Guilford 20-yard line, but the drive stalled there. Bermudez trotted out and nailed a 31-yard field goal to give BC a 16-14 lead with 6:41 to play.

Guilford needed to respond, but the Eagles' defense held strong. A stop by Gwashavanhu on third down forced another punt, and another short Guilford punt gave BC the ball back. The Eagles' run game went to work and churned the clock while moving the chains. BC moved the ball down the field to the GC 25-yard line, but the drive stalled there. Bermudez was called on again and drilled a 50-yard field goal to extend the lead to 19-14 with 50 seconds on the clock. Guilford was out of timeouts and had to attack the sidelines. The Quakers did just that, but the BC pass rush forced Danciu out of the pocket and brought up fourth down and the game with five seconds to go. The Quakers' quarterback heaved his Hail Mary to the goal line, but it was picked off by Kyle Galloway to secure BC's first win of the season.

Burke was 13-of-24 passing for 107 yards and a touchdown. Jervis caught the touchdown pass from Burke, while tallying 59 yards on the ground and 62 yards receiving. Whitely led BC on defense with 11 tackles for his fourth game with double-digit tackles this season. Joey Strong and Jayden Booth each recorded a sack, and Galloway added the game-clinching interception.

Bermudez had a historic day. His 50-yard field goal to stretch the lead late is just the third 50-yard field goal in ODAC history and was just two yards shy of the league record set by BC's Michael Padgett in 1998.

Bridgewater's defense limited Guilford to just 10-of-31 passing and 173 yards of total offense.

The Eagles are back in action next week as Washington & Lee visits on Hall of Fame weekend.
