Bridgewater College rode a strong pitching performance from
senior John Sinclair to defeat 10th-ranked Christopher Newport,
4-3, Tuesday afternoon.
The Captains scored a run in the top of the first, but the Eagles
evened the score in the bottom of the inning on a bloop single to
right by Kevin Kirk.
BC took the lead in the second when Drew Elkins led off with a
double and scored on a double by Aaron Read, making the score
2-1.
The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Elkins and Alex
Hogge singled and Brad Buracker walked to load the bases. One run
scored on a single by Tyler Hodges and Mitchell Edwards was hit by
a pitch with the sacks full to force in another run, giving the
Eagles a 4-1 lead.
Sinclair left after the seventh with the Eagles still holding a 4-1
lead. Sinclair allowed just the one run on seven hits while
striking out five and walking three.
The Captains scored twice in the eighth against freshman relief
pitcher Jeremy Leake. Ben Lenda singled in two runs for CNU, making
the score 4-3. Leake worked out of the inning, stranding two
runners on the basepaths.
Leake shut the door on CNU in the ninth to record the save in the
4-3 victory.
Edwards and Elkins each finished with a 3-for-4 day at the plate to
lead the BC offense while Hodges and Mike Lenox each added two
hits.
Bridgewater improved to 12-13 overall while CNU dropped to 15-5-1.
