BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College
Eagles rapped out 23 hits and rode a pair of strong starting
pitching performances to sweep a doubleheader from Gettysburg 8-2
and 13-4 Sunday afternoon.
In the opener, Drew Elkins ran his record to 2-0 on the season
with five solid innings on the mound. Elkins allowed just four hits
and one earned run. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
The Eagles gave Elkins an early lead when Mitchell Edwards
singled with two outs and Andy Chrismer followed with a homer to
left, giving BC a 2-0 lead.
Gettysburg's Drew Roy belted a solo shot in the top of the
second, the only run allowed by Elkins, to make it 2-1 before the
Eagles broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the
third.
Drew Easter led off the third with a single and moved all the
way to third on an errant pickoff throw. Easter scored on a double
by Kevin Kirk, making the score 3-1. Kirk moved to third on a
passed and Edwards walked to put runners at the corners. After
Edwards stole second, Chrismer plated Kirk with a sacrifice fly,
making the score 4-1. Brett Howell then doubled to score Edwards
and a single by Jonathan Mason plated Howell to make the score 6-1.
The Eagles scored their final two runs in the fifth. With two
outs, Chrismer reached on an error and Howell was hit by a pitch.
Both scored on Blake Stokely's triple for an 8-1 Bridgewater lead.
In the nightcap, Alex Foltz evened his record at 1-1 with five
shutout innings. Foltz allowed just two singles while striking out
four and walking none.
The Eagles gave Foltz all the runs he would need with a 5-spot
in the second. Stokely plated the first run on the game with a
single and Devon Snow added a run-scoring single for a 2-0 lead. A
two-run single by Kirk put the Eagles on top 5-0.
Bridgewater blew the game open with six runs in the fourth. Snow
reached on an error to open the inning and Easter was hit by a
pitch. Kirk plated one run with a single before Edwards walked to
load the bases. Chrismer cleared the sacks with a grand slam to
left center, giving the Eagles a 10-0 lead. Howell then doubled and
scored on a double by Stokely to make the score 11-0.
Chrismer was 5-for-7 during the doubleheader with a pair of
homers, four runs scored and seven RBIs. Howell finished 4-for-6
