BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Senior pitcher Casey Hartman
hurled eighth shutout innings Friday afternoon to lead the
Bridgewater Eagles to a 9-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC
action.
Hartman allowed just three hits while striking out eight and
walking three before giving way to Blake Stokely for the final
inning.
The Eagles took the lead in the third when Drew Easter doubled
and scored on a single by Kevin Kirk to lead 1-0.
Bridgewater broke the game open with a 4-run fourth inning.
Brett Howell singled to lead off the inning and took second on an
errant pickoff attempt. After moving to third on a grounder, Howell
scored on a double by Drew Elkins for a 2-0 BC lead. Jonathan Mason
and Devon Snow both walked to load the sacks before a sacrifice fly
by Easter plated Elkins for a 3-0 lead. Kevin Kirk and Mitchell
Edwards then ripped consecutive RBI-singles to give the Eagles a
5-0 lead.
The Eagles added two more in the fifth with Howell once again
starting things off, this time with a double. An infield single by
Stokely put runners at the corners before a sacrifice fly by Elkins
plated Howell to make it 6-0. Stokely came around to score on a
single by Snow to move the margin to 7-0.
Bridgewater scored its final two runs in the seventh. Andrew
Hacker led off with a single and took second on a wild pitch. Snow
then singled to center, scoring Hacker to make it 8-0. Snow later
scored on a single by Andy Chrismer for BC's final run.
Howell and Stokely were each 3-for-5 at the plate to spark the
BC offense. Easter, Kirk, Chrismer and Show contributed two hits
apiece to the Eagles' 17-hit attack. Kirk, Elkins and Snow each
drove in a pair of runs for BC.
The Eagles are now 7-9 overall and lead the ODAC with a 4-1
record. The Marlins are now 9-8 overall and 3-4 in the ODAC.
Bridgewater returns to action Saturday when the host
Randolph-Macon for an ODAC twinbill. The first game begins at noon.
