Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College clinched
the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ODAC baseball tournament with a
doubleheader sweep of visiting Guilford on Saturday
afternoon. Bridgewater's two wins coupled with
Hampden-Sydney's loss to Randolph-Macon in the second game of their
doubleheader assured the Eagles of having the best record in the
ODAC.
The Eagles scored eight runs in the second and coasted to a 12-2
win in the opener before turning back the Quakers 6-2 in the second
game to complete the sweep.
Bridgewater scored twice in the bottom of the first to grab the
lead in the opener. With one out, Devon Snow singled and Brett
Howell walked. Andrew
Hacker singled to score Snow and Howell scored on a sacrifice
fly by Andy
Chrismer for a 2-0 BC lead.
The Eagles took advantage of two costly Guilford errors in the
second inning to score eight runs. Blake Stokely reached on an
error to open the inning and Drew Elkins walked. Both
runners then moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Nuttycombe. With two
outs, Stokely scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead. Snow chased
Elkins home with a single to center, making the score 4-0.
After Snow stole second and Howell walked, the Quakers went the
bullpen with Adam Hart coming to the mound for starter Will
Simpson. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch before Hacker
singled to right to drive in two runs, making the score 6-0.
Chrismer followed with a long two-run homer to left, making the
score 8-0. Mitchell
Edwards walked and Stokely doubled and both scored on another
Guilford error, making the score 10-0.
The early cushion was plenty for BC starter Alex Foltz. Foltz went the
distance on a four-hitter to improve to 6-1 on the season. He
allowed two runs, both unearned, while striking out eight and
walking one.
Hacker was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the BC offense in the
opener. Chrismer also knocked in three runs and Stokely was 3-for-4
with three runs scored and one RBI.
Game two settled into a pitcher's duel between BC's Casey Hartman and Guilford's
Zach Daw.
The Eagles touched Daw for two runs in the third to grab the
lead. Edwards reached on an error, moved to second on Nuttycombe's
sacrifice bunt. Drew
Easter walked before Snow doubled to left, scoring Edwards with
the game's first run. Easter scored on Chrismer's slow roller to
third as the Eagles grabbed a 2-0 lead.
The Quakers finally got to Hartman in the fifth. Ben Esser
singled and scored on a double by Alex Starbuck, pulling Guilford
to within one, 2-1.
The Eagles added a run in the sixth on a run-scoring single by
Elkins, but the Quakers got the run back in the top of the seventh.
Casey Mann singled and stole second and scored when Starbuck's
single rolled past Easter in center field, making the score
3-2.
Bridgewater opened up some breathing room with three runs in the
bottom of the eighth. Hacker led off with a single and scored on a
triple by Chrismer to give BC a 4-2 lead. Jonathan Mason then
singled through the drawn-in Quakers infield to score Chrismer to
make it 5-2. The Eagles loaded the bases and Mason scored on
Nuttycombe's groundout, giving the Eagles a 6-2 advantage.
Hartman pitched six innings to pick up the win. The lefty
allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out six and
walking four. Joseph
Lucas allowed one earned run on three hits in his two solid
innings of work and Elkins finished up with a hitless ninth.
Daw took the loss despite pitching a solid six innings. He
allowed three runs, one earned, on eight hits. He struck out and
walked just one.
Chrismer led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort. He drove in two
runs and scored twice. Snow, Mason and Elkins added two hits each
for the Eagles.
Bridgewater is now 19-16-1 overall and 14-3 in the ODAC.
Guilford drops to 14-23 overall and 5-13 in the ODAC.
The Eagles wrap up their regular season Sunday when they travel
to Lynchburg College. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
