BRIDGEWATER, Va. – In the regular season
finale for the Bridgewater Eagles women's tennis team, the Eagles
struggled at the top of the ladder in singles and doubles, but
controlled the bottom rungs en route to a 6-3 victory over visiting
Sweet Briar.
In doubles play, junior Morgan McGhee and freshman Olivia Stone fell at
number one by an 8-1 score, before the Eagles took the both matches
at number two and three.
Sophomores Ally McConaughy
and Emily
Schweitzer notched their 17th doubles win of the
season with an 8-3 victory at number two. McConaughy and Schweitzer
are now just one win away from tying the single-season doubles wins
record for an individual at 18 (Hillary Teeter, 2007-08).
At number three, senior Megan Mathias
teamed up with freshman Miranda Donovan
for an 8-0 victory, to put the Eagles up a point after doubles
action.
Bridgewater fell at number one and two singles to fall behind by
a 3-2 tally before rallying for the final four points of the day to
seal the victory.
Mathias fell in top flight singles action by a 6-2, 6-2 score,
while Stone lost by a 7-5, 6-1 tally at number two.
Senior Alissa Michael
posted BC's first singles win of the day in a three-set thriller at
number three. Michael won the first set before falling in the
second set and rallying to in the third to pull out a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1
win.
McGhee was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at number four, while McConaughy
posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at number five.
Freshman Amanda
Gorby moved one win closer to the single season wins record
with a 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 10-7 victory at number six. Gorby currently
has 14 wins on the season which places her just one win shy of the
single-season record of 15, currently held by Marlena Pipkin.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday, April 24 when it
opens the 2010 ODAC Women's Tennis tournament at Washington and
Lee.
