LYNCHBURG, Va. - Washington and Lee rode a
strong starting pitching performance from Chuck Davidson to upset
Bridgewater College 7-2 in the opening round of the ODAC baseball
tournament Thursday at City Stadium.
The Generals' Hunter Serenbetz belted a solo homer in the second
to put W&L on the board.
The game settled into a pitcher's duel early between Davidson
and BC's Drew Elkins
as the homer was the only run scored in the first five innings.
The Eagles had their chances against Davidson but left runners
in scoring position in each of the first five frames.
The Generals opened some breathing rooom in the sixth with a
pair of runs. Jonathan Stutts singled and moved to second on a
thowing error. John Ditore walked and Stutts moved to third on a
wild pitch to put runner at the corners. Ditore was caught
stealing, but Mike Decembrino singled to score Stutts, making the
score 2-0. Will Lewis then doubled to right and Decembrino scored
when the throw back to the infield bounced away, making the score
3-0.
W&L broke the game open with four more runs in the seventh.
Ditore and Decembrino singled home runs and Lewis added a two-run
single to make the score 7-0.
The Eagles finally got on the board in the bottom of the inning
when they loaded the bases against Davidson. The Generals went to
the pen and Andy
Chrismer delivered a two-run single against relief pitcher
Gregg Laswell, making the score 7-2.
Laswell shut the Eagles out the rest of the way as the Generals
finished off the 7-2 victory.
A year ago, the Generals won the tournament form the sixth seed
and Thursday they took their first step toward defending their
title.
Davidson worked 6.1 iinnings to pick up the win. He was charged
with two runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked four.
Kevin Kirk was the
only BC player with more than one hit as he finished 2-for-4.
Bridgewater will play Friday morning at 11:00 against Virginia
Wesleyan. The Marlins lost to Lynchburg College, 5-2, in Thursday
second game.
