BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater trailed
2-1 after the conclusion of doubles play to the visiting Roanoke
Maroons. In singles action, BC took each match at four through six
singles but couldn't garner another victory as the Eagles
came up short in a 5-4 loss to the Maroons in ODAC women's
tennis play.
Bridgewater dropped matches at number one and two doubles before
the tandem of Ally McConaughy and Emily Schweitzer turned in an 8-2
win at number three to bring the contest to a 2-1 tally as the
match changed over to singles play.
The win for McConaughy and Schweitzer was the 11th of
the dual match season and sixth in conference action and moves the
tandem into 13th in the career women's doubles
wins list at Bridgewater. Their .857 winning percentage (12-2) is
the second-best of any doubles tandem in single-season school
history.
In singles action, senior Megan Mathias dropped a 6-3, 6-4
decision to Laura Dodson at number one.
Freshman Olivia Stone fell by a 6-0, 6-0 tally at number two,
before Alissa Michael fell in a three set showdown by a 4-6, 6-2,
6-0 score at number three.
Junior Morgan McGhee got the Eagles their first singles win of
the day with a tight 7-5, 6-3 win at number four.
McConaughy followed up McGhee's win with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2
victory at number five.
Freshman Amanda Gorby also posted a three-set victory for the
Eagles by a 6-0, 1-6, 6-2 tally, but it was too little, too late as
the Eagles fell to visiting Roanoke by a 5-4 score.
The win for Gorby gives her a team-high eight singles wins in
2010.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday when Hollins and St.
Mary's (Md.) come to town.
