BRIDGEWATER, Va. – In the team's 2011 home opener, the Bridgewater Eagles men's tennis team controlled play against visiting Shenandoah en route to a 6-2 victory to claim the squad's first win of the Spring season.
Bridgewater got things started by taking two of three matches in doubles play. Senior Brad DeWitt and junior Brent Floyd claimed an 8-3 victory at number two doubles, while Tim Gower and Matthew Chaulkin picked up an easy 8-1 triumph at number three.
In top flight doubles action, Bridgewater fell in the tightest doubles match of the day by a 9-7 margin.
Bridgewater claimed victories in four of the six singles matches played, with one match being called early due to darkness.
DeWitt picked up a 6-3, 6-3 straight sets victory at number two, before Callow earned a hard 6-1, 2-6, 10-2 three set win at number three.
Floyd and Gower rounded out the victories for the Eagles at number four and number five.
Sophomore Peter Hawkins had his match at number one singles called off due to darkness.
Bridgewater now sits at 1-3 on the season and is back in action on Saturday afternoon when the team travels to Guilford.
