Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. - Bridgewater's ninth-inning rally came up short Friday at the Eagles fell to Randolph-Macon College, 6-5, at City Stadium.
The Eagles will play an elimination game Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. BC will meet the winner of the Hampden-Sydney vs. Lynchburg game.
The Eagles entered the bottom of the ninth inning trailing by a score of 6-3. Brett Howell led off with a single and Jake Wade followed with a single to right. Alex Nuttycombe ripped a single to left, scoring Howell to make the score 6-4. A single by Bryan Sanderson made it 6-5 and a bunt single by Devon Snow loaded the bases with no outs.
Randolph-Macon reliever Dale Langford then did his best Houdini impersonation. He retired Kevin Kirk on a comebacker to the mound, throwing home for the force out. Langford then struck out Jonathan Mason for the second out and retired Andrew Hacker on a fly ball to right to earn the save and preserve the 6-5 victory for the Yellow Jackets.
Michael Helbig pitched eight-plus innings to earn the victory. He allowed five runs, four earned, one 10 hits.
Robert Gallet took the loss after pitching two-plus innings for the Eagles.
Nuttycombe paced the Eagles at the plate with a 3-for-4 day and Hacker added two hits.
Greg Mitro and Jay Lichter led Macon's 15-hit attack with three hits each.
