Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. - Randolph-Macon scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth Saturday afternoon to take the kead and the Yellow Jackets defeated Bridgewater College, 6-2, to win the ODAC baseball title.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Kevin Kirk singled and stole second to move into scoring position. He took third on a groundout and scored on Andrew Hacker's grounder to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Randolph-Macon tied the score with a run in the seventh. Jordan Walton, voted the tournament Most Outstanding Player, singled and moved to third on a double by Greg Mitro. Walton scored on a groundout by Jay Lichter, tying the score at 1-1.
The Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Jay Thompson singled and Brett Howell was hit by a pitch, giving the Eagles a pair of baserunners. Thompson scored on a single by Jake Wade to put the Eagles up 2-1. Randolph-Macon James Bierlien then retired the next two batters to minimize the damage.
Randolph-Macon then got to Lucas with three runs in the eighth. A sacrifice fly by Jeb Weymouth tied the score and Mitro delivered the big blow with a two-run double, giving the Yellow Jackets a 4-2 lead.
Randolph-Macon added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth and relief ace Dale Langford retired the Eagles in order in the bottom of the ninth to finish off the Yellow Jackets championship run.
The Eagles received a gutty effort on the mound from Lucas who pitched 7.2 innings after throwing a 113-pitch complete game on Wednesday. Lucas allowed seven hits and four runs in his stint on the mound.
The Eagles managed just six hits on the day with Bryan Sanderson, Kirk, Jonathan Mason, Howell, Thompson and Wade producing one hit each.
Lucas was joined on the all-tournament by BC teammates Devon Snow, Alex Nuttycombe and Mason.
Bridgewater finished the 2011 season with a 26-18 record. Randolph-Macon, now 21-17, will represent the ODAC in the NCAA Division III baseball tournament.
