Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. - A pair of freshmen combined to pitch the Bridgewater College Eagles to a 4-3 victory over Washington and Lee in a key ODAC contest Tuesday evening.
Robert Gallet and Tyler Slanovec combined on a six-hitter as the Eagles maintained their hold on first place in the ODAC.
Gallet worked 6.1 innings and allowed three runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out three. Slanovec was perfect in 2.2 innings to pick up his first career save. He struck out two and did not allow a baserunner.
Anthony Cardona doubled in a run in the bottom of the third to give the Generals a 1-0 lead, but the Eagles responded with three runs in the fourth to take the lead for good.
Andrew Hacker and Jake Wade each singled to lead off the inning and Jay Thompson followed with a well-executed sacrifice bunt to move the baserunners to second and third. Brett Howell followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Hacker, tying the score at 1-1. Wade scored when Zach Hynes' grounder was thrown away at first, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. With Hynes on second following the error, Bryan Sanderson delivered a run-scoring single for a 3-1 BC lead.
The Eagles made it 4-1 in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Kevin Kirk, but the Generals bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to pull within one. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, W&L's Alston James singled to score both runners, making the score 4-3.
W&L threatened again in the seventh against a tiring Gallet. Gallet retired the first batter on a grounder, but two straight walks forced Eagles skipper Curt Kendall to go to the bullpen. Slanovec entered and retired Jonathan Stutts on a infield popup and Alex Maragos on a grounder to second to escape the jam and preserve the 4-3 lead.
The Eagles finished the game with 10 hits, three each by Devon Snow and Kirk. Sanderson added a pair of hits for Bridgewater.
The Eagles improved to 18-12 overall and 12-2 in conference play. W&L dropped to 13-12 overall and 10-5 in the ODAC.
