BRIDGEWATER, Va. – On Senior Day at the BC Tennis Courts, the Bridgewater Eagles men's tennis team swept doubles play and dropped a pair of matches in singles action en route to a 7-2 victory over Guilford in a matchup that effectively decided the number two seed for the upcoming conference tournament.
Freshman Evan Stack and freshman teammate Brandon Larsen got things started in the tightly contested matchup with an 8-4 victory at number one doubles.
The tight matches continued at number two as the tandem of junior Peter Hawkins and freshman Christian Lynn teamed up to post a hard-fought 8-6 victory.
At number three, freshman Mike Cable and senior teammate Brent Floyd earned an 8-5 win to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead heading to singles.
Hawkins dropped the first set by a 6-4 tally before rolling back to earn a 6-4 win in set number two to force the tiebreaker. In the third and deciding set, Hawkins dropped a 6-1 decision to fall in a tight match in top flight singles.
Larsen claimed a 7-5 victory in the first set at number two before retiring after falling behind by a 4-0 score in the second set as Guilford drew to within a match of the Eagles a third of the way through singles play.
Stack got the Eagles back on track at number three with a 6-0, 7-5 triumph, while Floyd fought hard to a 7-5 win in the opening set before cruising to a 6-2 win in the second set to claim the match at number four, handing Bridgewater the team victory.
At number five, Lynn notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory while sophomore Sam Churchill rounded out the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-4 win at number six.
The win was the sixth in a row for the Eagles as they heat up with the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament looming in just over a week.
Bridgewater is back in action on Sunday afternoon at Virginia Wesleyan as they close out the 2012 regular season. First serve against the Marlins is set for 1 p.m.
