Five-Run Eighth Inning Lifts Eagles Past W&L, 9-4

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Bridgewater College Eagles wiped out a two-run deficit with a five-run outburst in the eighth inning Wednesday to defeat Washington and Lee, 9-4, in ODAC baseball action.

With the victory, the Eagles remained the only undefeated team in ODAC play as they improved to 5-0 in the conference and 11-5 overall. W&L dropped to 10-9 overall and 4-3 in the ODAC.

The Generals scored first with an unearned run in the third. Generals shortstop Jonathan Stutts drove in the run with a single to left.

Bridgewater got on the board in the top of the fourth and took the lead with a pair of runs. Nick Fulk led off the inning with a single and took second on a wild pitch. Bryan Sanderson then plated Fulk with a single through the right side, tying the score at 1-1. Sanderson took second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a groundout by Jonathan Mason. Andrew Hacker then singled up the middle to score Sanderson, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Stutts evened the score in the fifth when he belted a two-out, solo homer over the fence in left-center field, tying the game at 2-2.

The Generals regained the lead against lefty Joseph Lucas with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Drew Weprinsky and Alex Maragos opened the frame with back-to-back singles, but Weprinsky was retired at third on Alex Mait's sacrifice bunt attempt. Maragos raced home on a double by Keegan Dolan and Mait scored on an infield grounder by Luke Deary, with Deary safe at first on an Eagles error. Lucas escaped further damage by striking out the next two batters, but the Generals were on top 4-2.

The Eagles finally got to W&L lefty Eric Wisotsky in the top of the eighth. With one out, Darren Yoder singled and moved to third on a base hit by Fulk. Fulk then moved into scoring position by stealing second. Yoder scored on a double to right by Bryan Sanderson, pulling the Eagles to within 4-3. With runners at second and third, Mason worked relief pitcher Ian Shaw for a walk to load the bases. Hacker came through with the clutch hit as he doubled down the left-field line to put the Eagles on top 5-4. Bridgewater wasn't finished as Mason scored on Ryan Smith's grounder and Hacker raced home on Christian Armstrong's two-out single, putting the Eagles on top 7-4.

Bridgewater added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth. Fulk singled with one out and scored all the way from first on Sanderson's hit-and-run single to left-center. Sanderson moved from second to third on a wild pitch and scored on Hacker's sacrifice fly for a 9-4 Eagles lead.

Nick Corbin took the mound for the bottom of the ninth and retired the Generals in order to finish off the 9-4 win.

Lucas pitched a solid six innings, but was not involved in the decision. The senior lefty allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Freshman righthander Justin Petock picked up the victory with two scoreless innings of relief. Petock allowed two hits and struck out two batters.

The Eagles are back in action Saturday when they travel to Greensboro, N.C., for an ODAC doubleheader with Guilford College.
