BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's volleyball team fell to visiting Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Virginia Wesleyan College, 3-1, Tuesday evening.
Virginia Wesleyan started out hot in the first set, scoring four points until a service error placed the Eagles on the board. However the Marlins were quick to keep their steady lead, only allowing Bridgewater two more points before running ahead on the scoreboard once again.
Despite the gap, the Eagles fought hard to catch up as Carleigh Studtmann, Rachel Kinsey, and Megan Lookabaugh locked down a kill each with teammate Megann Grimes adding a pair of her own to bring the Eagles to an 18-10 score. However the Marlins never relinquished their lead and capped off the first set win 25-15.
A service ace delivered by Studtmann landed the Eagles the first point of the second set but the Marlins were quick to add a point of their own. Bridgewater snuck off with an early lead thanks to a kills by Lookabaugh and Abby Mills. The Eagles' hard hitting offense kept the team ahead of the Marlins, despite their best efforts to catch up.
Bridgewater pushed ahead in the final moments of the set as Rachel Kinsey locked down three consecutive kills to give the Eagles the second set victory, 25-17.
The Eagles had the first point of the third set but the Marlins were quick to respond and ended up taking the lead 9-5. Kinsey was able to lock down another point for the Eagles but the Marlins once again ran away with the lead.
Virginia Wesleyan continued to dominate most of the set until two service aces by Courtney Thornburg helped the Eagles decrease the point gap. But the final kill by Ashley Bologna delivered the Marlins the 25-13 third set win.
The beginning of the fourth set saw the score bounce back and forth until Bridgewater was able to take a small lead on several Virginia Wesleyan errors. However the Eagles refused to let the Marlins out of their sight.
Although Virginia Wesleyan was able to get a decent lead over Bridgewater, an unrelenting offense by Mills and Grimes closed the gap to 24-23. However Virginia Wesleyan's Tiffany Barrett had the last kill of the set, securing the 27-25 set win and the match triumph.
The Eagles were led by Mills who collected 12 kills on the offense and 21 digs for the defense. Grimes added nine kills with Lookabaugh chipping in eight. Chelsea Owensby matched Mills with 21 digs. Shannon Skellchock had 32 assists for the match while Courtney Thornburg had three service aces.
Alex Lambert led the Marlins with 17 kills while Michaela Holbrooks added 13 of her own. Marin Crowder led the defense with 23 digs with Tiffany Barrett chipping in 15 digs. Kirstin Sessoms had 26 assists for the match.
The Eagles are back on Saturday as they travel to the University of Mary Washington for a double match feature. Bridgewater will face Salisbury at 3 p.m. followed by Mary Washington at 5 p.m.
