ATLANTA - Oglethorpe University rallied from a 2-1 deficit following the doubles action to nip the Bridgewater College Eagles, 5-4, Saturday morning at the inaugural Southern Shootout.
Oglethorpe's CJ Antonio and Ben Hirsch were victorious at No. 1 doubles, defeating Christian Lynn and Mike Cable 6-1, but the Eagles took the lead with wins at No.2 and No. 3.
Brandon Larsen and Thomas Rishcoff held on at No. 2 to edge Nick Roby an Cedric Andre 9-7. Sam Churchill and Kyle Hartfield rolled to an 8-3 win over Matt Jones and Josh Rosenberg at No. 3 doubles to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Bridgewater claimed wins at No.2 and No. 5 singles, but came up one match short of claiming the team victory. Two of the Stormy Petrels four singles wins went to three sets.
Hartfield rolled to a straight set win at No. 2, defeating Jones 6-0, 6-3. Churchill needed three sets to subdue Andre at No. 5. Churchill controlled play in the first set 6-1, but lost the second set 6-3. He bounced back in the third set to win comfortably, 6-1.
Antonio outlasted Larson in three sets at the top singles flight. Larsen bounced back after losing the first set 6-2 to even the match by winning the second set 6-3. Antonio won the deciding set 6-3.
Hirsch also needed three sets to defeat Lynn at No. 3 singles. The two split the first two sets, each winning 6-4, before Hirsch won the deciding set 6-2.
Roby defeated Rishcoff 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles while Rosenberg stopped Cable 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6.
Bridgewater played Birmingham Southern College on Saturday afternoon and the Eagles suffered a 7-2 defeat.
