BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College improved to 2-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with a 6-3 victory Sunday afternoon over Guilford College in men's tennis action.
The Eagles took the upper hand by winning two of the three matches in doubles play.
Bridgewater's Brandon Larsen and Thomas Rishcoff held on for an 8-6 win over Trevor Cox and Aaron Smedley at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3, Bridgewater's Kyle Hartfield and Sam Churchill turned back Mason Church and Levi Bruff 8-2.
Guilford picked up its point at No. 1 doubles where Turner Votipka and Erik Meiler slipped past Christian Lynn and Mike Cable, 9-8.
Bridgewater increased its lead with victories in the first two singles flights.
At No. 1 Larsen won a well-played match over Votipka 6-3, 6-3. Hartfield picked up Bridgewater's fourth point with a tough 6-3, 6-4 victory over Meiler at No. 2.
The Eagles also picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 4 to clinch the victory.
Lynn won a three-set marathon as he outlasted Cox 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Rishcoff had an easier time at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Church.
The Quakers won the final two flights for the final 6-3 margin.
Guilford's Smedley slipped by Churchill in two close sets 6-4, 7-5. Bruff took the win at No. 6 when Cable retired in the first set.
Bridgewater is now 6-6 overall.
