Box Score 2 BRIDGEAWTER, Va. – The Bridgewater College Eagles improved to 3-1 in conference play by sweeping a Saturday doubleheader from Virginia Wesleyan College. Nick Corbin hurled a complete game in the opener to pitch Bridgewater to a 5-1 win and the Eagles held off the Marlins in the second game, 8-7, to complete the sweep.
Corbin was in control the entire game in the opener as he scattered seven hits, all singles, and allowed just one unearned run. He walked three and struck out just two, but he retired 16 batters on infield grounders to improve to 3-0 on the season. Corbin has pitched 18 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
The Eagles gave the senior right-hander all the runs he would need when they scored twice in the third.
Darren Yoder walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a balk. A single by Nick Fulk put runners on the corners with one out. Yoder scored on Ryan Leake's grounder to third and all runners were safe on the play as a result of a Marlins throwing error. With runners still at the corners, Fulk scored on a groundout by Bryan Sanderson to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
The Marlins took advantage of two Bridgewater errors to score their only run in the fifth. Chris Gilliam walked to lead off the inning and was safe at second on a steal attempt when Sanderson muffed the throw from catcher Hunter Hensley. Justin Erby followed with a grounder to first and was safe on the play when Brendan Howell's throw to Corbin covering the bag was wide. Gilliam scored on the throwing error as the Marlins trimmed the margin to 2-1.
Bridgewater added two insurance runs in the seventh to take a 4-1 lead. With two outs and nobody on, Hensley walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Fulk singled through the right side, scoring Hensley to make it 3-1. Fulk moved to second on his hit when the right-fielder misplayed the ball and then scored on Bay Liskey's double, putting the Eagles on top 4-1.
The Eagles added their final run in the eighth. Justin Petock doubled with one out and was replaced on the bases by pinch-runner Ryan Fitzgerald. A two-out single by Derrik Walling plated Fitzgerald, making the score 5-1.

Fulk and Walling paced the Bridgewater offense with two hits each. Five different players – Fulk, Leake, Liskey, Sanderson and Walling – drove in a run for the Eagles.
The Marlins nicked Eagles starter Dillon Via for two runs in the top of the first to start Game 2. Brett Sutryk doubled down the right-field line and Zach Bach following with a run-scoring single to put the Marlins on the board. Bach was erased at second on C.J. Lindsay's fielder's choice grounder, but Lindsay moved into scoring position by stealing second. Taylor Erby's two-out single to left plated Lindsay, giving Virginia Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.
Bridgewater answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Walling was hit by a pitch and he scored all the way from first on Sanderson's double to the gap in left-center. Sanderson scored on Brendan Howell's single, tying the score at two runs apiece.
Via settled down and hung zeroes on the scoreboard for the next three innings. His teammates added one run in the second, two in the third and three more in the fourth to open up an 8-2 lead.
The Eagles scored in the second without the benefit of a base hit. Tyler Hoffman walked with one out and stole second. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
Sanderson led off the third with a walk and moved to third on a base hit by Howell. Petock greeted Marlins reliever Dylan Stoskus with a sacrifice fly to score Sanderson for a 4-2 lead. Howell was erased on a fielder's choice groundout by Hynes, but Hynes swiped second to move into scoring position. Darren Yoder walked and Hoffman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Stoskus then hit Cavin Clyde with a pitch to force in a run, giving the Eagles a 5-2 lead.
Bridgewater padded its lead with three runs in the fourth. Walling led off with a single and Sanderson reached on a throwing error with Walling advancing to third on the play. Walling raced home with the Eagles sixth run when the catcher's throw back to the pitcher following a pitch to Howell sailed over the mound. The Eagles made it 7-2 on a run-scoring single by Petock and a RBI-double from Hynes put the Eagles out front 8-2.
Virginia Wesleyan scored on unearned run in the fifth on Bach's RBI-single and the Marlins worked their way back into the game with a four-run sixth inning.
Singles by Taylor Erby and Gammons and a double by Jordan Miller cut the Eagles lead to 8-4. A run-scoring single by Ty Boothe, the Marlins fourth straight hit, made it 8-5 and ended Via's day on the mound.
Kyle Henshaw came out of the bullpen for the Eagles and with runners at first and third, Miller scored on Justin Erby's bunt to pull the Marlins to within two runs, 8-6. An infield single by Nic Kurz put runners at the corners and the Marlins made it a one-run game when Booth scored on Sutryk's grounder that was misplayed for an error. With runners at first and second, Henshaw picked Kurz off second base for the second out of the inning. Henshaw hit Bach with a pitch before striking out Lindsay to preserve a one-run lead for the Eagles.
