Eagles Fall at Shenandoah, 16-6

WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah rattled the Bridgewater Eagles men's lacrosse team early in the contest as the Hornets scored four quick goals and the Eagles never recovered in a 16-6 loss on Wednesday evening in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest at Shentel Stadium.

The Hornets took the opening faceoff and scored just seven seconds into the contest on a Tilghman Sanders goal to put Shenandoah up, 1-0. Shenandoah added three more goals over the next four minutes to take a 4-0 lead after just four minutes of play.

Bridgewater ended the Shenandoah (6-9, 2-5 ODAC) run with two goals of its own. With just under four minutes to play in the first, Kevin Ashcraft fired a shot into the back of the net off of a pass from Jeff Strickland to get the Eagles on the board and cut the deficit to 4-1.

Freshman Max Ruffing added Bridgewater's second goal with 2:52 to go in the opening frame to carve the Shenandoah advantage to 4-2.

The Hornets had the final say in the first as Connor Bishop scored with three ticks to play in the quarter to give the host team a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes of play.

Shenandoah added to its lead early in the second when Drew Brooks found the back of the cage to put the Hornets back up by four goals, 6-2.

Freshman Matthew Arndt found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season with 7:59 to play in the first half, trimming the deficit to 6-3 but the remainder of the half went the way of Shenandoah.

Bishop tallied a goal and Frank Tejera scored the final two goals of the half for the Hornets to send Shenandoah to the locker room with a 9-3 lead.

Out of the halftime break, the Eagles had the first say in the second half. Following a Bridgewater penalty, Curtis Hughes registered a man-down goal with 10:46 to go in the third quarter to bring the Eagles to within five at a 9-4 score.

Sanders tallied back-to-back goals for the Hornets to push the lead to an 11-4 margin before Derrick Daniels got in on the scoring with 8:15 to go in quarter number three to cut the gap to 11-5.

Shenandoah found the back of the net three more times in the third on goals from Bishop, Sanders and Stephen LaTona to put Bridgewater in a 14-5 hole with 15 minutes to play in the contest.

Aaron Paul got the final quarter started with an unassisted goal for the Hornets, extending the lead to 15-6.

Both teams traded goals down the stretch with Rob Simmons netting the Eagles' final goal and Tejarea registering an up goal with 53 ticks to play to finalize the scoring and hand Shenandoah a 16-6 victory.

Six different players got on the scoreboard for the Eagles offense and sophomore Andrew Buss picked up the loss in the cage after allowing nine goals and making three saves over the first 30 minutes of play. Conor Lawson replaced Buss in the second half and turned away two shots.

Sanders and Bishop led the Shenandoah attack with three goals each but it was Bridgewater owning a 42-35 edge in shots.

Ben Judy picked up the win for Shenandoah after making eight saves.

Bridgewater (5-8,0-6 ODAC) was led defensively by six caused turnovers from Lucas Clark, while Clark and Nick Strider each picked up six ground balls to lead the way for the Eagles.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday when the squad hosts Randolph. Start time against the WildCats is set for 7 p.m.
