BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's tennis team suffered a tough 5-4 loss Wednesday afternoon at Randolph-Macon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.
With the loss the Eagles finished 7-3 in the conference and will be seeded No. 4 in the upcoming ODAC tournament. Bridgewater will host Hampden-Sydney in the quarterfinals of the ODAC tournament this weekend. The date and time will be announced later.
In Wednesday's match, Randolph-Macon won two of three doubles matches and made the one-point advantage stand up in the 5-4 victory.
Bridgewater took its point at No. 2 doubles where Brandon Larsen and Thomas Rishcoff defeated John Adam and Brantley Stein, 8-5.
The Yellow Jackets took an 8-3 win at No. 1 when Ryan Byrd and Michael Baxter downed Christian Lynn and Mike Cable. Macon took the lead when Connor Hoerr and Ira Usry stopped Kyle Hartfield and Sam Churchill 8-4.
Four of the six singles matches went three sets as the Yellow Jackets held on for the victory by splitting the singles.
Bridgewater picked up a straight set win at No. 2 singles when Hartfield defeated Hoerr 6-2, 6-3.
Lynn and Churchill both won matches in three sets. At No. 3 singles, Lynn rallied after losing the first set in a tiebreaker to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-1 over Baxter. Churchill won his first set over Stein in a tiebreaker at No. 5 before Stein evened the match by taking the second set 6-3. Churchill bounced back to win the deciding set 6-3.
The Yellow Jackets picked up a point at No. 6 singles where Usry defeated Cable 6-0, 6-1 and then won three-set matches at No 1 and No. 4 to secure the victory.
At No. 1 Larsen lost a close first set to Byrd 7-5 but won the second set 6-3. Byrd took the third set by a score of 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Randolph-Macon's Adam rallied after losing the first set to Rishcoff 6-4 to win the next two sets 6-0, 7-5.
